IIRC the formaldehyde thing is just the carrier to bond shitty home lab made PCP to something smokable, and people aren't actually smoking just straight up embalming fluid.
I've known people that did it, fucked them up permanently. The whole Smokey from Friday got wet trope was a softening of the actual horror if anything, at least from what I've seen directly.
I have a personal tinfoil hat theory gangs gas crash test dummies up on that shit and send them out to do dirt because 1 they're fucking amped up and don't respond to pain and 2 they remember FUCK ALL when they come down (if they come back at all). The dude I knew that did it a lot would just turn into a drooling zombie sometimes for no reason, like his brain just shut down.

This reminds me of something from the RWBY thread where the OP stated that in order to produce any sort of quality writing, you need to be of above average intelligence, otherwise everything you produce is going to be slop. Doesn't surprise me at all that someone who thinks it is wise to spend all day saying the same shit about Trump over and over again would know nothing about the hard sciences.Patrick is intellectually lazy, he does not research shit ever, science related or in general.
For example, no normal person would ever install their fence backwards, the would spend 10 minutes googling "Milwaukee fence" before starting.
Compare his interviews about his books or his panels to someone like Douglas Adams who talks about different ideas and scientific concepts constantly in every appearance i have seen him in.
Fatso talking is essensially a coping session trying to convince himself he is not a retarded fat faggot, there is fucking zero scientific thinking or intellectual curiosity going on behind the curtain. Everything he knows about science is outdated information he gathered while growing up and watching television while eating alone in the house.
I bet the happiest day of his life was when he was invited on television to talk about the aTalkers and stupid shit like that. He could maintain the smart guy facade by just saying "i am a sci fi author" and talk about the shit he actually cares about, drama. Look how much more eloquent he becomes when he talks about that compared to science.

The Quora question is a repost, the joke seems to actually originate from Tumblr at some point early last year (though that site's interface is cursed beyond belief, so it's hard to say exactly). But yes, Rick certainly didn't come across it on his own in the wild.

I'm a BattleTech fan, which has a huge backlog of pulp sci-fi novels to give the setting flavor. None of them are masterful works of art, it's fucking pulp sci-fi for kids at the end of the day, YMMV.
Rick is actually on credits for writing a short story for the franchise, never in print (only in ePub) and it is by far the SHITTIEST BattleTech story I've ever tried to slog through as a super fan of something that's already clearly super autistic and retarded.
The title is super ironic
Pulp sci-fi is always kind of "by the book", you can tell there's some sort of corpo mandated style guide bible they have to use, every X paragraphs stop to explain something someone in universe should know as commonly accepted fact, etc etc. His little spurt into the already pozzed franchise is absolutely AIDS inducing and feels so phoned the fuck in.
IMO It's fucking terrible, even by already shitty BattleTech standards. I've got a full set of mint uncracked novels just as an autistic point of pride, I'd throw his away but it never even got printed. Nice writing stupid.

On the subject of Patrick's early works, his first published book was actually something called The Wererat's Tale III: The Collar of Perdition. He never mentions it.
I kind of want to read it. Judging by the cover, it's bound to contain some nuclear cringe.
It's part of a series started by a different author, Shane Moore, so I guess Patrick writing this was kind of like authorized fan fiction. It seems Patrick later had a falling out with him (fueled by TDS), which Moore recently commented on (prompted by the Pests):
