So... what happened during 94-97?
That is an interesting question. The most likely reason for the jump is die off and people aging into polling. There was a significant increase in black presence in mainstream media in the mid to late 80's. The black star which was kind of rare was becoming more and more common. Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington, Lawrence Fishburn, Halle Berry.
You had the Cosby Show and A Different World introducing people to an entirely different type of black family than say Good Times or shows that reinforced stereotypes in Sanford and Son.
Hip hop/Rap was on the rise at this time as well. Yo! MTV Raps had been introducing suburban white kids to the genre for a number of years by 1994.
Basketball had become insanely popular due to Jordan's dominance adding to exposure.
There was a lot going on in the late 80's and 90's. I am pretty sure that was also when the
first black _____ movement kicked off in earnest. Tyra Banks was the 1997 SI cover after all(and I think she may have been on 96 as well with someone else).
I would also argue that the black community was different during that period.
Gangster rap and certain types of criminal activity was pushed back on to a degree. Black single motherhood was actually being addressed in a way that made it look like a negative life choice.
It would make an excellent topic for a proper paper.
That all said I have some serious doubts it is at 94% right now or was even in 2021. I notice the increase matches pace with cancel culture's ascendance.
Porn started becoming much more easily available via the internet, with a major increase in producers making all kinds of porn (including lots of "Blacked"-style material).
Mmmm...I do not think porn was that widely available in 94-97. Most people were still using dial up. I do recall in the early 2ks porn stars being chastised for not fucking black men.
