There was something endearing about creating your page on MySpace and making it literally YOUR space. It encouraged individuality.

Not relevant... but oh my god Geocities. There was something so wonderful about having a tiny free place on the web to create your own. RN I'm going to need to move my tiny space from somewhere I've been for over a decade getting too expensive to find a cheaper host. They want to give me huge chunks of storage but I just need a tiny free space.

It's just not the same.

I had friends that went into web design because they started in tiny free places making homepages for neopets. They learned html on their own and went up from there. Having a FB or a dA or a tumblr, insta or tok just isn't the same. And even then it's all algorithm and trending shit.

I am old and sad.

Thread tax: The word I hate is "identify". I hate fag slang and tumblr fag slang, especially.

Earlier in the thread, someone brought up the common misuse of "disinterested". I'd never given it much thought but can't stop noticing and getting enraged by it now. So thanks for making me autistic about one more thing, whomever it was.

Red flag. This is a red flag. That's a red flag. It's on par with "yikes", "sketch", "sus".
I once heard a random commenter (idr what site) say their teacher made the class watch an episode of some romance trash tv show (you know the type) and hold up red or green flags as they saw the signs. :lit: Reminds me of "the ick". It was wild seeing all those twittards and tiktok girlies saying they got the ick from the most random things about a guy. He kisses with his eyes open? ICK. His name is Richard? HUGE ICK. His birthday is in May? MASSIVE ICK. I guess we have a whole generation that doesn't know what a pet peeve is...?
In their defense, I believe a lot of people who joined in on this meme were self aware and just joking around

Social media was fine before smart phones.
Yeah shit like MySpace, VampireFreaks, and I remember the pedophile cesspit that was MyYearbook all had their problems, but at least those were all things that people checked AFTER they got home. There was something endearing about creating your page on MySpace and making it literally YOUR space. It encouraged individuality. I'd say it'd even be cool to have HTML enabled create-a-page shit stuff à la MySpace for Kiwi Farms profiles but I feel that might derail conversations into "your page looks gay lol". Still would be a kinda neat thoughbeit.
This right here emphasizes how bad of an idea it was to make smartphones capable of utilizing social media. I liked it when phones were specifically used for communicative purposes in real-time. Having messengers on them, made sense. Keeping SMS, made sense. Keeping the internet as basic as possible, made sense.

But the doors got blown down when the IPhone ruined everything. Now it has been 24/7 of dumbasses feeling that they have to be their own news outlet. When you're out and about to do things, it kept you focused in what moment you were in. There's nothing "ok boomer" about it, it is simply about keeping social sanity in check. Look where the shit has gotten us now.

My inner Ted K has it that the former maintained balance with the natural world for hundreds of thousands of years, whereas the latter generated an economic death cult that has us staring down the barrel of extinction in just over 530. There's a difference between "worshipping" animals and respecting them as "other nations... fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of Earth" (to quote Henry Beston).
Just read this while looking around for commentary on the parallels between [The Epic of] Gilgamesh and Mononoke Hime/Princess Mononoke (1997).
Extinction is the product of a global attack on the commons, the great trove of air, water, plants and creatures, as well as collectively created cultural forms such as language, that have been regarded traditionally as the inheritance of humanity as a whole . . . capital of course depends on continuous commodification of this environment to sustain its growth . . . Indeed, there is no clearer example of the tendency of capital accumulation to destroy its own conditions of reproduction than the sixth extinction.
Don't wanna yap too much but thought it was relevant.
