It's also the correct term, whether you find it "really dramatic" or not. It's an act of vandalism -- defacing property that doesn't belong to you -- that requires effort and expense by the rightful owner to remedy. The property could be physically damaged during the commission of the vandalism (airspeed sensors don't respond well to spray paint, for instance) and even potentially during the repair, which wouldn't be necessary had the vandalism not happened in the first place.

Not to mention the need now to inspect the aircraft (and asphalt) for unexpected damage (perhaps that wasn't recorded or broadcast by the perpetrators) to ensure no loss of life or equipment just in case something was damaged unseen.

That's "damage" any way you look at it, unless you're not worried about people dying for getting in the wrong plane one morning for a routine sortie.
