I don’t expect Iran to have enough power to actually do anything substantial in response. I still cannot imagine that anything has happened here that would require boots on the ground.

i'm not so sure about that.
first, after this weeks exchange with israel their capabilities aren't in great shape anymore. i don't think they could do much serious damage.
and second, they are fully aware that they are outnumbered and outgunned to an extreme degree, and that strikes on american assets would likely result in severe retaliation, much more severe than anything israel has been doing. i'm not sure if they are willing to take that kind of damage.
