Iraq (apparently I lost connection so it deleted this whole half in the refresh) provided opportunities when we started to rebuild, contractors were raking in the cash and their infrastructure was so fucked it was basically like funding the rebuilding of a nation. These same opportunities don't really present them self in the current sandbox.

It was a failure to learn the right lessons from World War II and Vietnam. You can easily occupy territory if the fighting men are already disarmed and dead or wounded, and the populace is psychologically defeated or the structure of the society stays in place and existing power structures are exploited by the occupiers. If the people are still willing to fight, organized and receiving external support, the situation is much different.
