The difference is, this is a gut feeling assumption, but we know for Israel that they are pretty open about the Samson Doctrine ("if Israel falls, we will take the rest of the world with us"), they refuse to let inspectors into the nation, refused to sign the nonproliferation pact, and have been caught roughly six million times stealing nuclear knowledge and material from their allies.
So logically the western solution was to have Germany gift multiple nuclear submarines to them, whose sole purpose is the ability to launch retaliatory nuclear strikes should a nation fall.

No. What they likely still have is enriched Uranium. Not Highly Enriched Uranium. 60% enriched. Not the 90% you need to trigger a nuclear detonation. 60% is more civilian grade as opposed to weapons grade. 60% is what you would use for nuclear power and nuclear medicine.

When they tell you that a nuclear reactor cannot become a nuclear bomb, this is what they mean. You cannot compress 60% enough to trigger the nuclear explosion.

60% is way closer to weapons grade than civilian grade. Civilian grade uranium is at about 3.25%-5.5% enrichment in order to run a land-based fission reactor providing electricity to customers, while a land-based fission reactor providing research to educational/scientific institutions is at about 20% enrichment. The BBC produced a good infographic on the subject.


US Navy aircraft carriers and submarines use uranium enriched to about 93.5% in their nuclear reactors to increase efficiency and reduce the size of the core needed to achieve and sustain criticality. Iran could possibly desire highly-enriched uranium to build nuclear submarines, but there's not much point to building them because the only way Iran could benefit from nuclear submarines is if it had nuclear weapons to put on them and ensure second-strike capability. Iran is nothing more than a regional power so it has zero need to project power beyond the immediate vicinity right now.

Anyway, nuclear weapons require about 90% enrichment of uranium, though this is the ideal scenario. Theoretically, any highly-enriched uranium can be used to build a nuclear weapon, but the lower the enrichment, the more material needed to reach criticality. Either way, you tell me whether 60% is closer to 20% or 90%.
