I'm theorizing that the black shards are just what people are calling the Katanas. There's a katana by Carol's conspiracy board, there's one in the kitchen, and the knight has one.
Weirdly enough, even if you manage to chip the Knights sword neither katana seems to be damaged.

the black shard kris can obtain from the knight is dagger-sized in the dark world and fits in his pocket in the light world, unless carol literally owns the knights whole sword and keeps it at home theres no way the "black shard" would resemble a katana imo.
also maybe this could be another toby bait and switch but why would asgore suddenly talk about something so incredibly topical such as a black shard in the middle of his monologue about how hes going to show everyone something thats basically guaranteed to have to do with the knight or dark worlds? the game is all but screaming at you that this black shard is a key piece of the story asgore wants to tell. it wouldnt make sense otherwise.
also also theres the controversial detail that when the knight materializes his weapon out of his palm before battle it looks more like a baseball bat than a sword until he grabs it and the battle starts

Which may imply that Susie should be using swords, because the light world counterpart of Kris' weapons are writing implements. Also notable that Ralsei says that Susie should be wearing ribbons, which Kris can also equip.
This is actually just further evidence that the girl in the prophecy should be
Noelle
and something is fucked up with Susie being the third wheel and not her.
Because apparently if you mod Noelle into CH3 / 4 she can equip a couple of swords

So Snowgrave is just the soul going along the TRVE prophecy route
Yeah I reckon the story party was meant to be:
>Vessel
>Noelle
>Ralsei

But somehow things got fucked up and now here we are.

I reckon in chapter 5 there's gonna be some drama that will cause Susie, Noelle and Kris to split off from each other at the festival.
If you're doing Snowgrave, you'll go into the dark world with Noelle. If you're doing Pacifist you'll go with Susie.
Then at the end of the chapter, the other one will show up wondering what the fuck is going on. Which will lead to a falling out with Susie "why did you bring Noelle", or Noelle freaking the fuck out "what the fuck is going, this isn't a dream, why did you keep this from me?".

The crew arrives at the festival. There's some sort of minor blowup as expected resulting in either Noelle or Susie storming off, leaving you with the other. Then the Toriel, Asgore and Sans encounter happens. Asgore gets super butthurt and storms off, Your plus one says 'uh shouldn't we go check on him' leading you going to the flower shop and bam it's a dark world for some reason, cue you having therapy time with Ralsei as you do stupid colored flower door puzzles. Pretty sure Asgore isn't going to be the main villain though, he's just there and histrionic and winds up being the bonus boss (as per ch4 vents eavesdropping dialog) with the spurned party member taken hostage/brainwashed by the knight or something as the real chapter boss.

The only real curveball I can see here that would make me happy is if Ralsei was nowhere to be found if you were on the Noelle route implying whatever Ralsei is in the real world is being carried by Susie rather than Kris and could lead to some really fun setup for later chapters with Ralsei not knowing what happened.

the flowers clearly mean something. your idea of ralsei being left out of the dark world is fun but if hes there maybe he could finally get some fucking character development by being confronted with the golden flower, maybe expanding on what his connection to asriel or asgore is.
hes also clearly up to some shenanigans with his "how bout we close our eyes...?" tism fits. i fully subscribe to the theory hes doing it on purpose to distract the soul. i want him exposed and forced to face consequences

Fuck, I can't believe I never realized that
Kris is the one who slashes Susie and Ralsei in the Knight fight. [/SPOILER

I am officially over this little bastard. I am kicking his ass when I get my own vessel back I swear to God.
Hold a gun to his head point blank and go "REACH FOR THE SKYYYYYYYY..."

It's called Kris Slash Theory

This part is wrong, he says it before his last attack is triggered no matter what. Gerson has a "impress" stat that increments either by attacking him, or surviving past certain turn milestones from healing or not being hit. Reaching the required amount triggers his last attack and the line about the white pen. Turn 21 is the absolute max you can last before he says the line and ends the fight, even if you did nothing)
Attacking, healing, or using the special attack and making it bounce (especially the last one) speeds up the timer. If you defend, combat takes longer and there's a "secret" attack sequence if you only defend that's quite hard.
Unfortunately I might be getting old because I found the boss quite hard. Spamming heal works.

I was also thinking of something interesting about the sanctuary dark worlds. I wonder if the difference is because Susie created a dark world based on the church without knowing anything about religion so that's why everything is off and in the wrong spot.
This and she being afraid of being betrayed, it seems.

That reminds me, when Gerson explains chapter 4, he says that the heroes get a terrible weapon. This could play into that, Susie isn't supposed to be using axes/hammers, so it's a terrible weapon for her.
That's the Twisted Sword, which you might get later.

could this refer to the twisted sword? you have to ask malius to make it for you by combining the thorn ring and the pure crystal (currently unobtainable but speculated that seam can purify 5 shadow crystals to make it)
which if true would suggest that to get the "true ending" which follows the prophecy you have to beat the secret bosses. and also start and then abort snowgrave to get the ring although they might introduce a different way to get it later.
Seeing that sword requires the thorn ring, you have to either do that, or continue the evil route, where you'll possess Noelle at some point. Maybe the soul will distort her until you become the vessel you were supposed to be?

My assumption was that a human creating a dark world will wind up different from one made by a monster.
That's a given, seeing that Kriss, even while souless and using the player's soul, can still make bigger fountains than Susie. The Knight also can because she's likely a monster with a soul or using special gear.

I reckon in chapter 5 there's gonna be some drama that will cause Susie, Noelle and Kris to split off from each other at the festival.
That's a given seeing Noelle will go buttmad at some point.

Ral meeting Ass is a must, the narrative drama is too big to ignore.

So, I replayed Undertale.
Toriel is a much worse person that I remembered.
I never caught up that Mettaton was a trans allegory, but also I realized that he's the second biggest piece of shit in the game you can encounter, with the other one being literally souless.
Alphys is also scum but at least she's self aware about it, Asgore did nothing wrong and sans is a lot less funnier than I remembered.
