Maybe that's the latest Mossad move in their game of 50D underwater backgammon: convince the Ayatollah that his generals are Israeli spies in dire need of immediate arrest & execution, in turn spooking at least some of those generals to rebel in self-defense and thus actually serve Israeli interests (wittingly or otherwise), thereby making pro-Western regime change and/or a ruinous civil war which will render Iran irrelevant in Mideastern geopolitics for decades to come (either way) suddenly much more plausible than it had been just yesterday. Iran's options for retaliation are really limited. They really have to stick to US military targets in the ME.
If they close the strait they piss a lot of even sympathetic countries off.
If they attack oil infrastructure in the Gulf states they piss away any pretense of Sunni goodwill after the attack.
If they attack American soil they risk total invasion and regime change (note this isn't good for the US but it's basically suicide for them)
