Even though recently Valve came out like "Here's the entirety of Team Fortress 2 - server and client source code and an updated SDK, do what you want with it, but it has to be free."
But I guess preserving and giving an old game to the community is impossible, huh?
I don't want to reveal my power level too much, but I worked with a lot of the early TF2 devs. Many were Aussies - good cunts. There's an underlying FOSS adjacent sentiment at Valve that despite its enormous grip on the industry, is appreciated and observed by a lot of the technical staff. This has been the case for decades now, and Gabe has played no small part in a very calculated way to foster this culture.
You've mentioned the SDK as an example but there are many more. CS 1.6 open server asset allowances, Steam's policy on customer ownership in the event that Valve's services reach an unsustainable server upkeep / failure (last time I read their white paper, it was a similar policy to GOG's), their open source development and support for Proton based compatibility layers with Linux compositor APIs... the list goes on.
Jason has significantly misunderstood the technical and policy implications and expectations of the SKG initiative, and throws in red herrings like "server binaries" to obfuscate facts of the matter.
I don't remember where I was going with this but I don't believe he's opposing the initiative out of his partnership with Ludwig at Offbrand Games; it's his ego, stubbornness, and refusal to accept being wrong for once in his life that has caused this unrelenting autistic commitment to stand by what he said from the start (which was wrong to begin with).
