Mikayla Raines, founder of the popular animal rescue organization Save A Fox and a well-known YouTuber, has died by suicide, her husband Ethan Raines confirmed in a heartbreaking video uploaded to the Save A Fox YouTube channel on June 23, 2025.

Mikayla, who was known for her tireless work rescuing and caring for foxes and other exotic animals, had been battling severe mental health conditions including depression, autism, and borderline personality disorder. According to Ethan, despite years of therapy and various medications, she continued to struggle with daily life and emotional regulation.
In his emotional 11-minute statement, Ethan revealed that Mikayla had been the target of a prolonged online harassment campaign. The abuse reportedly came not only from strangers but also from individuals within her personal life and others in the animal rescue community.

“They spread false rumors, and being the sensitive person she was, it deeply affected her,” Ethan said. “She tried for years to push through the pain, but this time it was too much.”

Mikayla is survived by Ethan, their daughter Freya, and the many animals she cared for at Save A Fox’s Minnesota and Florida locations. Ethan has vowed to continue her legacy and the mission of the rescue.

Fans and fellow animal lovers expressed shock and sorrow online, paying tribute to Mikayla’s impact on the rescue community.

The thottery is not what the majority of the criticism was about, and this Leddit pooner's opinions aren't likely to have been the ones that weighed on Mikayla most heavily. She's been criticized by former employees as well as other animal sanctuaries, and I imagine that hurt a hell of a lot more than some random spergposts on Reddit.

Mikayla was profoundly negligent in her "work" with these animals. For one, she was purchasing them from fur farms, creating an economic incentive for the farms; literally doing nothing would have been better if her intent was to end fur farming.

Further, once obtaining the foxes, she would keep them in improper enclosures and give them dogfood. Their pens were separated by a single layer of chain-link fence; the foxes would injure themselves on the fences trying to dig under them or fight each other through them. These are just two of over a dozen examples:

Inevitably, one fox, Oliver, escaped, and Mikayla's response was to buy a similar-looking fox from a fur farm to replace him so that her audience wouldn't find out.

Foxes with painful, progressive, incurable conditions like Valentine would be kept alive and paraded around for donations when any reputable rescue would have put them down and ended their suffering. Valentine was barely able to eat.

Volunteers who were injured while working at Saveafox were told to lie about how they get their hurt, because Mikayla did not want to pay for or be legally responsible for their injuries.

Mikayla and her husband Ethan, despite the claims of their constant e-begging posts, were actually incredibly well-off; they have a collection of sports cars, allegedly including one worth 400 thousand dollars (not the one pictured here).

Because SAF is a charity, its 990 is publicly available, and it stated that SAF had a net income of over a million dollars in the fiscal years of 2022. SaveAFox is registered as a fur farm and a nonprofit, but not an animal rescue.

She has kept several exotic animals inside her house as pets, including a sand fox, a snapping turtle, a skunk, fishercats, a sugar glider, a squirrel, at least two coyotes, a bobcat, a ring-tailed lemur, and a pair of jackals she bred. She immediately took the jackals' pups away to bottle feed them herself, even though no indication was given that the pup's actual mother wasn't capable of nursing (bottle-fed puppies and kittens have lower survival rates than ones who nursed).

The foxes were also permitted to wander around in her house. I can only imagine what that means for the safety of all the smaller prey animals, as well as her toddler-age daughter.

I'm not saying that Mikayla deserved to be bullied, or that's it's a good thing she killed herself. A four-year-old girl has been robbed of a mother. What I am saying is that this woman was a net negative for the world, and especially for the foxes who had the misfortune of ending up in her "care." She was not a hero, she was a hoarder. She is to foxes what the Tranch was to alpacas.

That’s what irks me about this. The Redditors in a sense were right. The issue became the way they went about it and the blatant double standards espoused by them. So what makes their “snark” behavior acceptable but the Kiwi Farms and other sites gets blamed for the actions they didn’t do?

It’s very informative to know about this information and it shows how multifaceted certain cases can be. Not as extreme as the Tranch per se, but still unacceptable. But what is unacceptable is the snide and insufferable behavior coming from people like Kazeolion.

Mikayla’s behavior is proof that it’s best to have some arms length away from the internet. Her husband too should’ve been a real stopper but his behavior as seen was also very repugnant to say the least. I’d wager and say her husband will likely be putting up a facade of “mourning” for the next few months and deep within his heart, it would be nothing but a shallow contempt for Mikayla. Because at the end of the day, BPD is a nightmare to deal with.

When you’re crying on the internet immediately after, are you really devastated? Because when TyAmongAnimals died in May of 2024, it took until November to memorialize him. You didn’t see anyone close to him cry out. But then again, Ty didn’t really blare things out loudly.​

I have to agree. I thought SAF was alright, until I found out about all of this, in THIS manner. It's all fucking sad, but ah, what can be done? I just wish nobody committed suicide in this.

On the other hand, I despise KazeoLion, and I hope he/she/whatever gets the payback they fucking deserve. This pattern seems to be common with zoophile degenerates, with the online harassment and abuse. I'm surprised the above post (which is a great surface dive on the issues with SAF) doesn't mention Apollo, who had to have a leg removed after being attacked by another fox because the fencing wasn't deep enough. He already had an invasive operation to repair an ear after being attacked in a furfarm, and then loses a leg when he's in his new home. It's sad.

My main gripe is the direct buying of fur farm foxes. Yes, on paper it's a better life for the foxes, but it puts more money into the industry than leaving them be. Farmers can charge double for live foxes, the foxes are not bred for long lives and have health issues. And I dislike how she kept foxes like Valentine alive while they're struggling when, if it was any other animal, people would say, euthanasia is the most merciful course.

All of this said. A suicide is still a suicide, a young girl is left without a mother and that is always going to be tragic.

People on Twitter talking about this incident have said the snark subreddit in question only had 20 or so members. If this is the case, I call 100% bullshit on the subreddit contributing to the suicide in any meaningful and/or line-crossing way (unless there are examples of posts from the sub that cross the line from critical commentary to attempts at life ruination).

If the collective "harassment" that this lady received reportedly consisted of mean online posts from total randos, as well as criticisms from people she personally knew, then the shit she was getting from her IRLs would obviously trump mean comments on a 20-member subreddit.
