I'm surprised anyone is trying to reason with him at all. If you watch his stream for twenty minutes, his extreme narcissism and midwittery becomes obvious. This will sound harsh, but Maldavius' behavior strikes the exact same cords as when I was watching Darrell Brooks defend himself. It's the same kind of brain.

For whatever reason, I think arrogant overconfidence just happens to attract people who don't think too hard. It's depressing to think about, but yeah, speaking authoritatively and being willing to swing on people who disagree with you (conveniently in contexts where they can't advocate for themselves) seems to have a magnetic effect on people who don't seem to know much about the thing you're talking about, and that, I think, is the key to his popularity.

I think that's also largely why Charlie is popular, but he's incidentally an ally in this situation, so I'll cut him some slack for the time being.

Ross is a genuine guy who has been spearheading a campaign to protect consumer rights on his own time, and probably some out of his own pocket. I can't imagine how disappointing it would be when a big Youtuber/Twitch Streamer comes stomping in like a retard and completely misrepresents what you've been doing, and then instead of taking the time to actually understand it, acts like he understands it and then argues for that interpretation no one but him had. I genuinely want this to pass, not just for consumer rights, but because I want to see Thor angry. I want him to get pissy because he has to spend 10 minutes(Or 2 hours, if you've seen his code) to do something that Ross was responsible for helping mandate.

That would be sweet irony.

Oh, yeah, I don't mean to imply I think he's a narcissist or has an overwhelmingly-high self-opinion or anything, I mostly just mean to say that (even as he regurgitates the popular opinion) he speaks pretty authoritatively, seems to speak with a strong sense of implicit righteousness, and can pidgeonhole the opposite side as he does so. It's less about his self conception and more about the way he portrays himself, you know?

Like with all that Helena Taylor bullshit the other year, a huge amount of the initial confusion was because he spoke in a way that seemed to imply he was firmly-knowledgeable about the subject (how much VA work pays on average, for example) even if he was just regurgitating the incorrect consensus while knowing nothing.

I guess I mean to say I'm describing the way these people conduct themselves more than I'm describing their actual psychology, because that methodology seems to be what's so magnetic for the mass audience. Speaking confidently and with clear enemies who are definitely idiots and should be clowned on seems to appeal to people.

That said, yeah, I did kinda conflate those points in a way that made it seem like I think he's more narcissistic than he probably is, pardon me.

I would argue that Ross's approach has been incredibly mature. It's really easy to get into the pig pen and the fact it took him 10 months to even dip his toe in not wanting to take away from the initiative shows a lot of restraint. I wouldn't call would he's doing right now 'soft spoken', just firm and direct without turning it into dramaslop. Thor and the greater internet have done well (us included lol) to do that.

Yeah, and I'd also argue it's been hugely to his benefit - curating a persona of "I don't like fighting people or getting dragged into drama" puts you into a different tier in conversation and almost gives you a sort of implicit moral highground in situations where you do get involved, just look at how people are continuously describing him as such. It's damn good optics, and that's cool because I want people to have more reasons to be good to each other, I think a world that rewards that sort of behavior inclines people towards not being pointlessly antagonistic.
