It certainly wouldn't start a trend.

Protecting the people from abuse is one of the few legitimate responsibilities of government. Inept and inefficient as government is, it is absolutely within their job description to regulate something like this.

Eeerm....acktually, source code and documentation are both covered copyright, so releasing those things to the public would be a hecking violation of the developer's intellectual property rights. Imagine a poor, small indie company having to shut down their game because they can't afford the servers, and now having to release all their source code. And it turns out that small company had actually written some of the most revolutionary netcode the world has seen, and now the evil big corpos can gobble it up for free, all because the original devs couldn't pay their server costs and had to release their intellectual property to the public as a punishment. Is that really what you want to do? Force all these small indie companies to release their incredible custom libraries for the evil companies like Epic to steal.
It's all for the little guy that we need to resist any type of consumer advocacy.

They don't even need to release the source, so long as they have proper documentation of the server process flow, that would go a really long way in getting a way to revive the game - people could make their own bespoke clone services without having to awkwardly reverse engineer the system if they aren't willing or able to release binaries. I'm sure Jason would still find some way to bitch about that.

I've actually thought about this with TikTok. It is possible, however. It's a bit tricky. You would need to have a service (a VPN or dedicated server) that's always running 24/7, you need a constant proxy list so you don't get IP banned, someway to shift through not being identified as a bot/geniune traffic, and in theory, it should be possible.

I seriously doubt releasing the source code after your project flopped is actually hurting anyone's bottom line and if small developers can repurpose cutting edge open source material it is actually a net positive for the industry as a whole.

I think one main issue here is with IP rights holders, or "developers" who act as nothing but IP rights holders. They're just capitalists who sit on their asses and collect money while taking advantage of consumers and workers while contributing nothing. People who sit on intellectual property and want their games to age into obsolescence so they can sell you a new game. Or a remastered game with minimal effort. Or the same game on another platform. Or a minimally remastered game on another platform with "new" user generated content, like the 108th version of Skyrim. It makes sense that the whole industry has moved from run of the mill capitalism into literal landlordism with live service games, charging rent and evicting you at their whims.

It's mainly a TikTok/Instagram problem because their services are one and done, meaning as soon as the stream stops, there's no archive. They don't save their streams anywhere so you'd have to be there while it's happening to archive it. Other platforms like Rumble doesn't really have this issue because VODs are automatically uploaded after a stream is done unless the channel specifies otherwise.

So, you'd have to develop something like

• Constant scans of Mald's account to see if he's live [The issue I see here is the amount of requests that would get sent to the server]
• If he is live, download his stream
• If not, keep scanning

I dont think thats what they're saying at all. If the systems are there and can be used to enact change then why not use them? Sure you may want the government to be removed from the equation entirely but thats simply not feasible with how corporations run now and while it is arguable that the government is the reason these corporations are able to get away with what they already are whether due to negligence bribery or anything else. fighting that system isnt solving the issue a hand.
