How can you tell when somebody is faking schizophrenia? - This is hypothetical, of course.

Say I had a friend who was in the military, who was ostensibly Christian, and has always been sort of paranoid in general and into conspiracy theories/mysticism type stuff. Around the time of COVID he got into crypto and that has slowly consumed him, blending with the conspiracies and mysticism into incoherent nonsense he babbles about constantly. He's even adopted that QAnon bullshit.

It really ramped up the last couple of years or so, I really started noticing it about a year ago but others who know him said it's been about a couple years now. He's in his mid 30's, a little early for a midlife crisis but he's unsatisfied with his life, so maybe that factors in.

Everyone thinks he's nuts now, but as a person who doesn't take everything I observe at face value and looks for alternative explanations or ulterior motives, I think that the relatively sudden shift in his behavior could be intentional, though for what reason/s I can only speculate.

I'm usually pretty good at telling if someone is lying, and he gives those tells, but if he's truly lying then he's going ALL-IN on the act, because his shizo babble is non-stop. I don't think he's dangerous, for what it's worth, and he's still maintaining his responsibilities, so it's nothing yet worth considering an intervention or whatever over. But I want to know what to look for in schizophrenics specifically, maybe if there's some kind of tests or something.

Schizophrenics are incapable of not talking about/acting upon their particular faith/delusion. They will think about it every waking moment and it defines their life. Like if they believe they're a unicorn they will do anything they're convinced will make them achieve their vision.

If your friend is a schizo, he will also try to take action relating to his delusions. It depends on what the exact delusion is about but if the suspected schizo don't actually take action relating to their delusion and just act crazy it might not actually be schizophrenia.
