I have this vague memory of a post from /v/ about how video games are the market were experimental capitalization models for software is tested on. If the model works, non-gaming related software will follow and apply similar models. If gamers accepts it, so will rest of the market.

I hope this will succeed since a lot of software today used in infrastructure and crucial areas are borderline being blackmailed by these software companies as well as internet providers (every thing needs Internet to work).
