UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Have the news stories saying all the old people died in the heatwave hit the news yet? They usually roll those out Monday evenings when the weekend sports have done their thing.

Having standards and thinking it's bad for women to dress like prostitutes makes me brown? Is that how bad the country has become where suggesting we don't act like scum is offensive to you?
Do not waste your time. They're a brown immigrant living in Norway, best to be avoided.

So a Reform politician was repeatedly punched in the head. I wonder what the top minds of reddit are saying about this, given that violence against MPs is frowned upon.

if you are thick enough or cruel enough to be a Reform politician you could probably do with a good kicking.

The saddest thing is that people will believe he was attacked for political affiliations, when in reality, he was probably being a racist cunt, picked on the wrong guy and got a smack down for it.

Sorry but I don’t trust a word any Reform politician says. To be Reform is to be inherently stupid, a bully or a liar. I want to know what happened first as I wouldn’t be surprised if he made it up or brought it on himself for being a twat.

If cruelty is the only language you speak then you shouldn't be surprised when people respond in kind.

Kinda mad that archive took so long that some of the direct calls for violence were already jannied. There might be something interesting on that remove reddit thing.

But to paraphrase, I'm a fucking idiot who keeps getting drawn into ragebait and the average autistic redditor is one bad day away from shooting their Reform representative.

They might be.

We should still post about how we want out country to be. The government want us isolated and to think we're on our own for wanting better. If we talk about what we want and others read it we can see we're not alone in wanting it. I will proudly say I want a comfortable town to live in, that doesn't smell of piss or weed and where people dress with some pride in themselves. Where dancing for tik tok videos is laughed at and the buses are never more than 5 minutes late!

In fairness, Fed shrieks like a tranny all the time, so I can't fault xer for that. :male:
I don't know about xer. I thought it was funny when I saw that come up. i think xey are scared of getting another thread ban. What was the last for?

Reform politician was repeatedly punched in the head.
That is the whole story. He thinks it's politically motivated but said nothing more. Got a few bruises and the police are investigating. He does look like a fat Hitler which is funny.

Manchester evening news.

Boy, 16, on stolen bike died trying to get away from burglary victim chasing him

3 kids broke into a bloke's shed and stole 3 motorbikes at 6:30 am. He gave chase going 30 in a 20 zone and they drove across a road and got hit. He's in court because he didn't obey the speed limit and didn't check on the dead kid after he got killed by a random woman. He called an ambulance 4 hours later and they arrested him shortly after.

It's not a crime to nick a bike you saw for sale on Facebook. But don't you dare try to stop the criminals. You're a murderer if they drive into oncoming traffic and get what they deserve.

Went to Wales. Saw some castles, some more flowers, and lots more "ARAF." Very few non-whites except for a specific place where there were a LOT of either Indians or Muslims (I couldn't tell), which I found distasteful. Unsurprisingly, they were disobeying the "do not feed the ducks bread" rule clearly signposted.

Wales is weird. They're all proud about their "national identity" which is basically just "I am Welsh" (even English people with a Welsh parent lmao), and go on about how they're "still here." Not sure what they mean by that because they pay their taxes to England and obey English laws, so what is Wales? They survive because the English let them. They were conquered easily, couldn't prevent the castles being built, and then failed to siege the castles to win back their country. I believe at one point one of the castles there was successfully defended by a handful of English lads - what an embarrassment.

Pretty scenery up North though.

I wish my country had conquered more shit. It's amusing seeing the aftermath a couple hundred years down the line like that.

I too took the Yorkshire Gold recommendation and made some iced tea with it. I quite enjoyed it. These days I am drinking more and barely eating.

Who do you think funded the roundheads?
They funded themselves, because they were all wealthy Southerners, whilst Charles I mostly have support in the North, which wasn't as well off and he had to rely on his own finances to get it done. At the outbreak of the civil war it seemed like a rather normal affair (Nobles opposed to monarch vs. Monarch himself) before transitioning into what it did. The "Five Members" were MPs who committed treason and were thus to be arrested, their treason being the encouragement of Scotland to invade England with promises they'd cause a popular revolt during the Bishop Wars (Which they definitely did do) and at this point in time Jews were still expelled.

I think this is why, unlike the French, we kept our nobles in-place during our brief time as a Republic ("Commonwealth") because some also fought and led armies on the side opposing the monarch.

Lifetime ISAs leave some with less money than they put in

Some people who pay into a Lifetime Individual Savings Account (LISA) may end up getting less money out than they put in, MPs have warned, as they call for the product to be reformed.

Anyone under 40 can open a LISA to either help save towards retirement or buy a first home. You can put in up to £4,000 a year and the government will top it up by 25%.

But the Treasury Committee said if LISA funds were withdrawn early due to unforeseen circumstances, charges mean people face losing 6.25% of their own savings. It also warned the "complex" product may not suit everyone and it might have been
mis-sold to people on certain benefits.

The government said it would respond to the committee in due course.
You can hold cash or stocks and shares in a LISA or a combination of both.

A LISA can be held in addition to any other type of individual savings account, such as a cash ISA or a stocks and shares ISA. These other options allow you to pay in up to £20,000 a year.

Senthil Kumar Kabali, 37, from St Neots, Cambridgeshire, invested the maximum £8,000 in a Lifetime ISA over a period spanning two tax years. He received £2,000 from the government.

One of the conditions of the product is an investor must buy a property at least 12 months after the first LISA payment.

However, Mr Kabali bought a £257,000 flat in November 2024, having cashed in his LISA in September, when he had only had it for six months, because he had found an "ideal" property within his budget and did not want to lose it.

"Instead of waiting for my LISA to mature, I took out the money and ended up losing over £500 along with the government bonus," he said.

"In my opinion, it's a fraudulent scheme taking money from individuals."

Best use of public money?

The Office for Budget Responsibility predicts spending on bonuses paid on LISAs will cost the Treasury around £3bn over the next five years.

The committee questioned whether the LISA was "the best use of public money given the current strain on public finances" and also raised concerns that the product could be "subsidising the cost of a first home for wealthier people at a significant cost to the taxpayer".
"We are still awaiting further data that may shed some light on who exactly the product is helping," said committee chair Dame Meg Hillier.

"What we already know, though, is that the Lifetime ISA needs to be reformed before it can genuinely be described as a market-leading savings product for both prospective homebuyers and those who want to start saving for their retirement at a young age."
A Treasury spokesperson said: "Lifetime ISAs aim to encourage younger people to develop the habit of saving for the longer term, helping them to purchase their first home or build a nest egg for when they're older.

"We welcome the committee's report and will now review its findings and respond in due course."

The government has previously said it is "looking at options for reforms" when it comes to ISAs to encourage investing money.

It has said that while it is important to support people to save, it wants to get the balance right.

Ok......so where to begin with this little shit show.
The rules for this investment are up front, transparent and universal. Anyone entering into this agreement had full knowledge of the terms and conditions of the deal. So, as always, caveat emptor ( buyer beware ).
Since 2017, to invest in anything and be behind now would take a considerable lack of skill. Yes, market turbulance, but staying invested would reap rewards, especially in the UK and US markets.

I do wonder about people like Senthil Kumar Kabali. I assume he was paid to be part of this article. Otherwise, why in effect volunteer to nationally be proclaimed as the village idiot ? The scheme was laid out in black and white and he accepted the terms when he invested. Presumably a property ( in effect arguably a better investment he could also live in ) turned up and he decided to pull his resources from one, with clear exit penalties, and invest in another.
Unfortunately he seems to be complaining about the opportunity cost of making this switch - in investment performance attribution, this is something known as allocation effect ( the part of your return that is attributable to where the investor decided to allocate their assets ).

So please why is this guy complaining ? Did he just expect to get to have his cake and eat it ? That is the risk of making an investment where you accept a return for committing to it. The fact that the government effectively gives the investor 20% on the first year ( and they also get any return on the actual investment too ) makes this a very good choice, which is probably why the fairly modest cap of £4k and the exit penalties.
I'm confused why he thinks the scheme is fraudulent. I very much doubt he knows what the word means. The investment was lawful, the terms are laid out, it isn't deceitful and it certainly isn't one sided as it offers a potentially excellent rate of return, if the investor keeps up their end of the contract.

The biggest part of the article for me is that there is a claim that these were mis-sold to people on certain benefits. What the fuck ? So in effect this means people on benefits have left over money to save and invest ? Would the implication of this not be that the benefits are far too generous to begin with for them to have money left over for such purposes ? I thought the idea of benefits was that they were supposed to be a short term aid to get people back on their feet ? Nobody should be allowed to be on benefits that long term and especially not that long term and generous that they should have so much money left over that they are investing in LISAs or ISAs. I can't see how the government can possibly claim they aren't wasting the tax payers money if that's the case.

The shit the bumboys boof into each other isn't that classy either, half of them are sucking dick for rent anyway, you think they care that much about clean needles?
I wouldn't say classy but designer drugs in this context usually means a more professional large lab made it even if they have no idea what they are actually taking. It's a different route from how it's made to how they get it, one is random people cooking meth diy in a garage, the other is practically a pharmaceutical company based in China or Mexico or whatever pumping stuff out by the ton.
