I've had cheap-o door knobs like these where the handle fell off. The ones I had were held on to the actual door mechanism by a single, short hex-bolt screw that went up into the mechanism (so that the hole was facing down and hidden from plane view). An imperfect fit + jiggling from tons of uses + gravity was enough for the screw to fall out and be lost forever. I wonder if that part just fell out and was lost after some door slamming tantrums, so then there was nothing holding the outer door knob on.
It's one thing to juice bossman when he's at his down baddest because you want to coax the simmering violence out of him but to actually expect to see any of that money back is sheer lunacy.
