I finished MHE and while it works on an individual basis with some rare misses, the overarching meta-narrative left me wanting.

The most egregious and out of place reddit bullshit was the girl super hacker being toted around by the hard-ass former military man turned therapist. It felt like filler fan service specifically curtailed for a reddit audience.

The ending itself felt off as if there was a rewrite because the author didn't like where MC was taking the story. The kid saves himself by using the magic of Satan to bring himself from the future? It even makes a parallel that he's his own personal Christ-like figure. It feels like a giant trap. The main MC never finishes grappling with the fact that because the devil exists, God should exist too so the only conclusion I can come to is that he's taken the route to worship himself which would be falling right into MHE's hands.

It's possible this is the whole point (MHE gets the maddest when kid MC starts praying to God which should be a clue that's what kid MC was supposed to do, rely on God. She also gets angry when he tries to summon his parents, the closest thing a child can conceive of as God and something outside himself. So instead he takes MHE up on her offer to alter reality to save himself.

If the ending was intentional in a "I'm a reddit athiest, I don't NEED God because fuck dad!" kind of way, than the story is fundamentally flawed, but I'm glad there's enough leeway that I'm not sure which way it leans.

I have played Ready or Not so much it doesn't affect me at all anymore, I've domed so many guys in the rape basement that the creepy pictures are just background noise to trying to not get one shotted by some black suit security guy with a MP7.

Elephant was a wild level, on par with No Russian. But it was really hard to take seriously on a second playthrough since the school shooters keep shooting the civvies before you can intervene and you get that tick of 'CIVILIAN KILLED -100 Points'.
The first time to play, you do feel this rush that you have to abandon your tactics and run around and find the school shooters to prevent them from harming more innocents. And to be completely honest, in real life there's 100% chance that a civvie is going to die before SWAT can actually intervene anyways... But on a second playthrough the level is a complete slog to actually play, especially if you are playing with bots only.
However, the mission really did its job on being disturbing...

I genuinely wish that in the next RON expansion pass or update we get more grounded levels dealing with true crime type shit. Elephant, Thank You Come Again (RIP my nigga Mudasir, he was one of the few good 'jeets making an honest living for his 'jeeta wife), A Lethal Obsession, Ends of the Earth, etc. were peak RON.

I really hated levels like Three Letter Triad and Mirage At Sea where they felt like bootleg Metal Gear Solid missions instead of an actual police operation.

But since there is the Steam summer sale right now, if you want something with a similar tone to 'peak RON' but also already exhausted the old SWAT games, there the Intravenous 2 game I've been playing. Obviously you play on the 'other' side of the law, but it scratches that gritty RON itch at least in terms of the worldbuilding and tone.

Elephant's a strange case because it's actually toned down, the original intent for the level was either a highschool or even middle school, but got turned into a college for it's release.
There's a map on Nexus called Maple Valley High that is probably close to the pre-release version of Elephant.

I wouldn't mind a pack with more generic levels with some randomized layouts, enemies, and objectives just to capture the day to day calls swat gets instead of the big highstakes story missions. Like a condominium level where you need to raid a meth lab or deal with a barricaded suspect, or a bank level where you could be dealing with a robbery or a postal employee on a spree killing.

They used to have an option to pick different scenarios, but they scrapped it.

I don't know if the story is as famous as it used to be, especially that online, people will immediately tell the true version once anyone references it. Again, lots of Reddit style moralising when McDonald's did end up fixing the issue. Ditto for McDonald's trying to win in the court, as if any corporation is willing to lose in a law case. It's just grating and can be done for anything, yeah sometimes human error and system malfunction causes an issue, that's life.
