I think Chantal might be passively suicidal. Many of her behaviors are frank symptoms of major depression (living in her own filth, irregular sleep schedule, no personal hygiene, constantly numbing herself with drugs, self-soothing with food, etc). I think the most bizarre part of this trip is Chantal’s desperate desire to be wholly dependent on a man - even if she has to pay him for the privilege of being his dependent. She tried doing this with Nadar but he had other options and was in Canada.
