For some reason this thought popped in my head. I was thinking about how hard would it be for Ian to rebuild his life if he just got divorced. I feel like anisa would make it a nightmare for him. And then another thought occurred to me, I remembered David Foley, an actor who basically had to flee Canada because the alimony laws there are crazy. When his wife divorced him, he had just been in a movie, making like 60 grand a month, of course as a small time actor that's not always the case. The courts ordered him to pay her 30 grand a month for the rest of his life to sustain her "standard of living before the divorce" and if he was short on a payment, he went to jail for two months, not able to make money, and accruing two more months of owed alimony. Which essentially would have landed him a life sentence in Canada as he was no longer making that kind of money.
So I asked Chatgpt if an American married to a Canadian can be subjected to Canadian alimony laws if they divorce in Canada.
"
Yes, Canadian alimony laws (known as "spousal support") can apply if you move to Canada and get divorced there, even if the marriage originally took place in the United States.
"
That's not good.
