I love cranes too. The one in your third pic is the one I posted about, ‘Walnut.’ She died last year at the ripe old age of 42! This guy, Chris Crowe, was her keeper/human ‘mate’ at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute’s (NZCBI) campus in Front Royal, Virginia for 20 years. She was an endangered species of crane.

This bird comes up to me when I work and likes to eat the worms I dig up, now it even brings its baby along! IMG_20250618_172111569.webpIMG_20250618_172202564.webpIMG_20250618_172039391.webp

RIP Walnut. I'm glad they had 8 chicks together.

I love this image so much. Baby critically endangered Siberian Cranes at the Oka Nature Reserve Crane Breeding Center in Russia. They try to prevent human imprinting with these crane costumes.

Here is a cardinal sitting up in a tree. My favorite bird.

I love the herons that hang around when I'm fishing on the beach. No shame in their game at all.
I've seen multiple Great Blue Herons near me, I love those guys. I've made it my mission for the summer to get a picture of one.

I heard these lil fellers "meeping" in the early morning when Spring first rolled around. One of my favorite bird calls lol.

the BLUE JAY population in my area is INCREASING and it is INCREASING my JOY
I don't think I ever saw a blue jay in person before when I lived in the US... so sad. I did see Stellar'e Blue Jays though when I visited Utah.

Unrelated but here is a kookaburra I saw flying above head when I was biking to work. I love when I see them, they bring me so much joy. Aussie birds make me smile so much, I'm so lucky to be here honestly. :)

No idea what's happening here.

They were probably trying to avoid something that startled them, like a falcon or hawk, and something went wrong where a bunch ended up hitting the ground. Thankfully this kind of mass flock accident is rare, but it does happen occasionally. What's more common is individual birds hitting windows and dying.

Edit: They were Yellow-headed Blackbirds apparently. :(

It's very sad, but part of me can't help but think what nice specimens they would make for taxidermy.

Woodpecker feeding baby

These come to my feeder in the winter, love them.
Reposting this bc I have a baby one of these (red-bellied woodpecker) that has started coming around to my window feeder. He’s really little and just starting to get a little bit of red on his head. (Can’t get a pic be if he sees me he flies off.)

Adult RBW. They’re so pretty. Don’t know why they’re called red-bellied, the red is on their head. Dumb bird name.

They do have a tiny bit of red blush on their bellies, but it's very hard to see in the field.

Have you guys heard of the initiative to get rid of all eponymous bird names? If it ends up happening, it's going to be so confusing to switch to using all the new names.
