Ongoing negotiations | Damascus–Al-Suwayda road blocked at Al-Masmiyah checkpoint
On July 1st, the M5 was blocked by "tribal fighters affiliated with General Security in Daraa" near the Al-Masmiyah checkpoint. It's also roughly where I believe Salah and Chantal were when the livestream crapped out as they drove South from Damascus.

Ongoing negotiations | Damascus–Al-Suwayda road blocked at Al-Masmiyah checkpoint
On Jul 1, 2025
Al-Suwayda Province: SOHR activists reported that Damascus–Al-Suwayda highway was blocked today near the Al-Masmiyah checkpoint, following attempts by a General Security force from Damascus to take control of the post.
According to SOHR sources, the checkpoint is currently manned by tribal fighters affiliated with General Security in Daraa, who have refused to hand it over, despite ongoing negotiations.
This development follows a series of documented abuses against civilians using the checkpoint, which witnessed complaints from Al-Suwayda residents.
The Governor of Al-Suwayda had recently promised a swift resolution to the issue, amid growing public anger over the treatment of travellers especially those from Al-Suwayda Province.
