During Trump one I put an inverted US Flag as my profile picture on my Facebook page. I took it down when my cousin, a Vietnam vet, asked me to.
This time around I waited for what we all knew was going to happen, a constitutional crisis. I also made it clear that I was not taking it down this time. When another person commented on one of my comments that she, a veteran, found the inverted flag on my profile disgraceful.
My response was that if you are more disturbed by my inverted US flag than the constitutional crisis that caused me to turn the flag upside down, you're part of the problem.
I believe in most of the Pledge of Allegiance
Not only were the words “under God” added during the red scare, as if communists and atheists would melt by uttering the words. But Eisenhower, when he indicated he approved of the addition of those words, were to proselytized.
I believe in the Declaration of Independence, even though tainted, we having been moving slowly toward the ideals it enshrines, making sure that all men and women are created and treated equal.
I haven’t celebrated every year because illnesses and a growing inability to walk (my knees have been whittled away due to the kind of arthritis I have. The bones in one knee looks like a scimitar.) But I have never NOT wanted to celebrate because of what my country, the country of my birth, the country my Dad’s family came too after the Tsar kicked them out of Ukraine and that my maternal grandmother’s family has been here so long I am eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution(DAR) has elected and what that maladministration has done.
I am no longer proud of my country. The stress of the dismantling of our institutions and OUR government by malign actors, oligarchs, the MAGA media (FoxNews, OAN, Newsmax, etc.) , and the Heritage Foundation, is deeply painful on so many levels. And since we’ve stopped talking about Project 2025 MAGA think we made it up, a Democrat hoax.
Watching my country men and women favor cruelty, even for those whose “biggest crime” had been to enter illegally, or go through all the steps to become citizens, doing it the right way only to find it all canceled and them deported breaks my heart. Especially since my Grandpa didn’t get his citizenship (they entered illegally too, he wasn’t yet 1 year old when they arrived) until he served as a Doughboy in WWI.
And I watch as Trump and Miller come ever closer to ending birthright citizenship, which will affect 2 of my sons since my husband was a legal resident alien when they were born. My husband didn’t gain his citizenship until the Obama administration — and we’re watching them get closer to denaturalizing people.
Yeah they say it’s only for those who’ve committed heinous crimes, but they said that about deporting undocumented migrants. “Only the violent.” has turned into “everybody.”
My stress and cortisol levels have been high since January 2025. My two oldest children have two step parents to worry about since my ex and I both married foreign nationals.
This is not a land I recognize. It’s a land I am doing what I can to protest and also to mourn. The Heritage Foundation told us that their take over will only be non-violent if the true patriots allow them to walk all over the flag, and shred the constitution.
Today is a day of mourning for true patriots. If I hang a flag out at all it will be the flag of distress (upside down US flag) I take to protests (3’x5’ it sometimes takes all my strength when a gust of wind is really strong).

May the USA return to what made us great. What we have now is everything I feared. So this year and for the foreseeable future I will not be celebrating July 4th, but mourning it.
I LOVE my country, the USA, and because of that I'm not celebrating the 4th of July this year.

.I don’t believe in the “under God” part, because not only do some citizens believe in no god(s) or believe in many gods, it makes the pledge contradict itself. “One nation, INDIVISIBLE” is divided by the words “under God,” especially in a pluralistic nation. The pledge is supposed to reflect our unity, but it serves to divide with those words. Our founders set us up as pluralistic nation."I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

I also believe in and love the U.S. Constitution and the rights it enshrines. Like many I learned the preamble by heart watching School House Rock.We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
