basically thats how it went, a lot of people who are currently MAGA were initially somewhat left or didnt care about politics during the early-mid 2010s, I was still in elementary school so I don't remember the Bush years that vividly (hell we had this mock election in my school that year that McCain won because someone started a rumor Obama was going to ban video games) but 2008 basically fucked the political right to a point where they had to push further right but also find a way to appeal still mostly apolitical people and we saw that fully manifested in 2016, the left going full retard with the wokeshit also immensely helped and likely accidentally saved the Republicans from political irrelevance

Both are more than happy to drop aspects they find “inconvenient” to attract more members. (You can argue this has been going on since the 90s) Worst I ever saw was a universalist church using three brown women (one with cow prints of course) to represent The Trinity while trying to fish for members at a Uni.

There's also the fact that the Protestant Religious Right had a lot of kooks in it; calling for things like banning DnD, while praising Israel as a tool of God's plan. The Protestants who saw this was wrong tried to course-correct by going far Left, especially since this kind of behavior drove many into the arms of the atheist/skeptic community.
If the Left were actually smart and didn't go full woke, most folks would still be voting Left right now, while the Right would've just been reduced to the Religious Right, and slowly lose their influence over time.
