It seems that TMS comissioned a brand new English dub for a select few episodes of Detective Conan. It's being done by Texas based studio called Studio Nano. If you remember the old dub by Funimation, Inspector Megure retains his voice actor from that dub and the old actress for Ran is now voicing Vermouth.
They dubbed the following episodes:
- 1. The Roller Coaster Murder Case
- 2. The Kidnapping of the Company President's Daughter
- 128. Ten Gran Robbery of the Black Organization
- 129. The Girl from the Black Organization and the University Professor Murder Case (2-hour special)
- 176-178. Re-encounter with the Black Organization
- 230-231. Mysterious Passenger
Spot checking it, it seems like a decent enough dub. Nothing truly offensive but also nothing really sticking out. My biggest criticism is that it's far too few episodes and they skip out on episodes in particular that introduce characters (Detective Boys, Jodie) that play parts in the latter half of the episodes. They also skip an actual Black Organization case in episode 54.
As for more personal gripes, I really like Jerry Jewel's Shinichi/Jimmy Kudo and wish he could've returned in particular. Having him be Conan's inner monologue was an inspired choice that I wish other English dubs had done cause most if not all of the English voice actors for Conan do not sound convincing when doing Conan's "adult" voice. I think this dub should've done so as well. Maybe TMS now has a mandate where they can't do that?
If TMS wants Detective Conan dubbed to be a thing in the US then this is probably the way to go. Release batches of important/curated episodes and do that till you catch up.
