I would rather work with someone that owns a silly mistake, learns from it and never repeats it than a tranny that would stubbornly refuse to admit any mistake they make and would perpetually argue on why they never made the mistake.

Now, he is not a low-level systems programmer and bitwise xor is very uncommon to use so if I would interview him and he made this mistake I would note it but it would not be an automatic fail. If he would mess up bitwise and, or or not, which are very commonly used, that would be an automatic fail but not xor which is mostly an un-used novelty.
That is if we are interviewing for a low-level systems engineer or a network protocol implementor. For application programmers I doubt they even know what bitwise logic is and would not expect they know it.

I remember that the ^ symbol was used in BASIC. So there is legitimate confusion if he grew up on MSDOS machines. Most people use also ^ for power in non-programming contexts.
While a rookie mistake to believe ^ is the power symbol (only used in Matlab, Basic), few actually know the bitshift trick for powers of 2 (I found out late in high school).
But even rookie mistakes shouldn't de-legitimize people. It is bad when you are smug and refuse any criticism.
