DC Comics Multimedia General - A crisis of infinite fuck ups

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Superman is not just "an immigrant", he's is specifically a refugee from another planet that was destroyed. He also had zero connection to or even knowledge of his alien origin until (depending on the adaptation) well into his adolescence if not outright adulthood. All of that blends into a very interesting and unique depiction of a man torn between two lives and trying his best to live up to both.

Is he Clark, is he Kal-El, does he have the authority to interfere with humanity beyond stopping bank robbers and meteors or not, is he just as human as anyone else raised on earth or will he always be an outsider, a million other questions that are very specific to Superman and all of which are rich with potential. To boil him down to just "an immigrant" sucks all of the truly interesting aspects of his circumstances out and just lazily ties it to real world shit.

It's like saying Bruce Wayne's story is just the story of "a billionaire" when that's just a single piece of who he is as a person and the life he's lived. To define him as that one thing just feels shallow, and the same goes for Superman. Superman simply coming from Krypton and "being an immigrant" isn't what makes him interesting or what defines him as a person. It's the Kents, it's Jor-El, it's his amazing abilities, his life in Smallville, his friends and the people he loves, the unending burden of responsibility he feels. THAT'S what makes Superman Superman, not weather he has a social security number or not.

Last I checked Jor-El wasn't just trying to get a greencard by dumping Kals ass on Earth, so the only parallel Clark has with most immigrants IRL is suddenly going 110% all in on his totally awesome alien heritage despite never actually visiting his homeworld or meeting his foreign family. :smug:

It appears that the projections from Critical Drinker regarding box office performance may be accurate. In terms of international market reach and budget considerations, Jurassic World 4 is likely to become profitable well before Superman or MCU's Fantastic Four. Additionally, for reasons that are not entirely clear, the portrayal of James Gunn's Superman has been adopted by the anti-American immigration rioters in Mexico.

What’s the consensus here on the direction a Superman movie should have?
I just want a long live action episode of Superman TAS. A comfy romp where Clark has his struggles, Superman is still figuring out what to do about something beyond his previous encounters, he has some trials and tribulations but through his familial upbringing, his friends and coworkers at the daily planet and his powers he eventually overcomes them.

What I don't want is an "introduction to the new DCEU". I don't want every single villain in Supes' rogues gallery to be shoehorned into the movie. I don't want the death of superman, or the reveal of his identity to Lois, or Batman V Superman, or the Flashpoint Paradox, or the multiverse with Red Son, or Darkseid, or any of that "end game" comic book fan service bullshit when this is supposed to be superman's debut movie, I don't care about this "universe" when I don't know this universe's Superman first.
I don't care about him having a crossover with the JLA or the characters from Peacemaker when I don't know who Superman(or who the JLA is) is to actually entice me into wanting to see these characters cross over. I don't care if WOAH POG SOY FACE HE'S GONE TO THE MEGA ULTRA PHANTOM ZONE AND FOUGHT ARKVOODLE THAT'S LIKE A MEGA COSMIC THREAT IN THE COMICS

Just make a good superman movie first and then make me care about your universe instead of trying to ape Marvel for the second time and failing because you want your avengers blockbuster right this instant.

>Watching Superman lose every fight for 2 hours straight and get his ass beat by z-list henchmen until the last 5 minutes

Okay that was more of an issue in Justice League but the joke stands

It does feel like this movie can't keep it's dick in it's pants long enough to just be a Superman movie and is moreso trying to be a "First movie in the Gunn-verse DCU featuring: Superman" movie, and that's very worrying. Throwing Krypto and fucking Guy Gardner at us in the very first film is a kinda wild choice when we don't even know this version of Clark yet. With how it looks from the trailers and teases I wouldn't be surprised if Mxyzptlk is thrown in too.

It's all... a lot. Trying to shotgun blast like 50 different wacky comic book shenanigans into the audiences face from the word go is the kind of thing that would probably confuse the fuck out of the average moviegoer. The average person is not going to soyjak and go "ZOMG ITS ZIPP DINGLEFLINGER FROM ISSUE 247!!!1!!" when a character shows up on screen, they're going to go "Who the fuck is this guy and why should I care about him?"

Like, imagine if Superman 1 introduced Luthors plan for the fault-line, Zod and his cronies, Richard Pryor's supercomputer creation, Supergirl AND Nuclear-man all in that first movie. Not even implementing them into the plot yet, just introducing all of them.

I doubt it would've been executed very well.

What’s the consensus here on the direction a Superman movie should have? From what I can gather, the Snyder thing was a disappointment but now it seems like they’ve overcorrected and we’re heading into Silverado-ass, aw-shucks, lunchpail Superman. I don’t really have a dog (lol) View attachment 7606005in this fight, I just find it fascinating watching this character get culturally assblasted every decade.
Coming back to this, I think a key distinction I have to ask is whether you want this to be a Superman film as in his own series or the start to a larger DC universe. I feel the general direction of how me and others would set up a film/series for Superman and other characters is really dependent on this distinction as DC is large with many moving parts that would need certain set ups to come into play later.

For me, if we are talking a wider universe, then most supers will be getting their sidekicks early. Teen Titans is DC's golden child brand with normies, and it would be foolish to hold them back from getting a trilogy or quadrilogy matching up with the JL. First Batman movie, Dick and Barbara are already there, not even going to waste time bringing them into the fold as holding off means less time to do things with them - Same goes for Kara Danvers, Donna Troy, Wally West, Garth, John Stewart, and Roy Harper. We likely only get 3-4 films per brand, so going to make the most out of these characters.

I like the idea of a DCEU having a throughline of being a generational narrative, sort of similar to how Batman Brave & The Bold or Young Justice has it. While each super's narrative should be unique and take on a different genre as @el bandito loco suggested earlier, I think this could be a base that ties the wider universe together.

What I don't want is an "introduction to the new DCEU". I don't want every single villain in Supes' rogues gallery to be shoehorned into the movie. I agree, but also acknowledge that for the whole DCEU thing, if we do go through with it, then some of this will probably have to be treaded early.

If I was writing it, I would try to keep the first as a Clark/Kara thing at worst with maybe 1-2 villains.

Would honestly just skip the Batman v Superman. Most like them as friends anyway - just have a nice end credits sequence of the two hanging out in one of the films.

Death of Superman is the third film in the Superman trilogy and is the film where Darkseid is set up. Story is more along the lines of the JLU adaptation where Superman is still alive, just transported, turning into that Superman off-world narrative @Humble Architect has given ideas about previously.

Flashpoint should be reworked into a final film for the Flash Trilogy. Building Flash up from fighting the rogues in his first outing to finally going up against a speedster in the final would be the general trajectory to up the stakes.

If we are speaking about a second film, previously I mentioned a Cadmus arc for the DCEU with vs The Elite being the second Superman film. I think the world turning on Superman and him starting to be seen as a relic who cannot function to the needs of the US government would be a great challenge. Maybe introduce Steel in this film as someone who was inspired by Clark, giving him some faith to continue.

Potential 4th movie would be an epilogue with Jon Kent now being around. Superman is more chilled out after Justice League 3/4 and is focused on raising his son. Batman similarly now has Damian for his potential 4th film, maybe we combine them and get a Super Sons film.

My goal is that with Superman 1 having Kara and 3 being Death, you get a new family member each film to fully make use of the main ones:
- Superman 1 - Kara
- Superman 2 - Steel
- Superman 3 - Conner
- Superman 4 - Jon

Interdimensional monkeys tweeting #Supershit to make people hate Supes is a very Mxyzptlk kind of plot.

What I want to see is a new villain called The Adjustor, where he's a twig boy that investigates all the insurance claims caused by Superman whenever he causes or is a victim of collateral damage. "So, you say that Superman picked up your car and threw it at Metallo and that's why it's totalled" and "So Zod grabbed Superman by the cape and threw him through your apartment."

Since Supes ends up fighting a supervillain about every month, insurance rates grows so high it makes Metropolis unaffordable to live for most people and everyone blames Supes for it, so Luthor figures out to give Intergang giant robots to cause even more destruction knowing that Supes will get unjustly blamed for it. It ends with Superman agreeing to attempt to fix the buildings that were damaged after every fight. Can't do anything about cars since Supes can't reimburse new vehicles until the Justice League is formed where he has the bureaucracy to handle these kinds of claims.

I was thinking about watching Superman this weekend... not to sure bout it though, Lex seems like a twink Why on earth have the last three superman movies depicted him as a twink? And superman seems like an emotional wreck.

I'm pretty sure the movie will at the very least make its money back(Its Superman after all)

I'm likely gonna see it on my days off but boy, am I worried it's gonna suck.

All I want for a new Superman film is to just adapt the Kryptonite story as the first film. Superman is green to saving the world and doesn't know his own limitations yet. Finds out the hard way about Kryptonite and Lex exploits it. Only change they could look into doing is have Metallo be the final fight of the film.

there's an episode of Patlabor about an insurance adjuster following them around

What is the game plan here Gunn? WTF are you doing?

According to Nexus Point News, DC Studios is eyeing Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy, Mission: Impossible) to star in an upcoming Korean TV series as Huntress, aka Helena Bertinelli, who will be half-Korean and half-Italian. The in-development project is set to be written and directed by Jung Byung-gil (Villainess). The rumored Huntress series is among several internationally-based shows in the works, according to the report. Mary Elizabeth Winstead played the DCEU version of the Huntress in the 2020 film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

If Huntress gets made, expect it to be a television series set in Korea and almost entirely spoken in Korean. The action project is among several in development at DC Studios that will seek to expand the genre into new territories. It's an exciting prospect that will further help the company separate its DC Universe from the past and its current competition, while also giving a chance for foreign filmmakers to tackle superhero projects. As of this writing, Huntress has not been officially announced by DC Studios, but if it gets done, perhaps it is the series that Gunn has described as "my favorite project nobody even knows about yet."

Why is this American comic character that is part of an American extended universe going to be in Korean? Who is the intended audience for this series as Huntress isn't exactly a major character and now you are making DC foreign films just to add more obscurity to the project.
