There's a reason why a lot of fortress cities preparing to defend against a siege throughout history both demolished the buildings outside the wall and then removed the debris. It's a solution in that particular case but it takes proper warning time that an enemy siege force is coming and proper organization. You will also be dealing with the consequent problems from having a portion of the population having just had their homes and businesses destroyed, including crime, overcrowding inside the walls, and people potentially pissed off enough that they'll spy for the enemy.
