A California mom charged in the death of her toddler was getting lip filler injections when she left the child in her car amid temperatures that topped 100 degrees, according to allegations in court records obtained Wednesday.

Maya Hernandez was charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of willful cruelty to a child in the death on June 29 of the 1-year-old boy and the hospitalization of a 2-year-old who survived.

Hernandez, 20, has pleaded not guilty, NBC affiliate KGET of Bakersfield reported. She is being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

Court records did not list a lawyer who could speak on her behalf.
A Bakersfield police report said Hernandez “admitted that it was irresponsible to leave her kids in the car, and she thought about it when she got out of the car but had no justification as to why she left them."

The children were left in their car for more than two hours while Hernandez got the cosmetic procedure at a spa in Bakersfield, roughly 110 miles north of Los Angeles, the report says.

The outside temperature reached 101 degrees while she was at the appointment, according to the report, which notes that such heat can raise a vehicle’s internal temperature to 143 degrees.
Hernandez told officers that she left her 2022 Toyota Corolla running with the air conditioning set to 60 degrees, according to the report. She said she gave her kids candy, crackers, milk and a cellphone to watch.

She had asked the nurse who was performing the procedure whether if she could bring her children in, according to the report, and was told she could leave them in the waiting room.

She did not bring the children inside, and she told police that she was "concerned about the time," the report says.
Hernandez said she was certain the vehicle would stay on because she had previously stayed in the car for extended periods, the report says. But authorities learned from a local Toyota shop that the car automatically shuts off after an hour of inactivity.

Hernandez told officers that she did not check on her children between 2 and 4:30 p.m. while she was inside, the report says.
She told officers that when she returned to the car, one of the children was foaming at the mouth and shaking, according to the report. She performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and called 911, the report says.

When the boy arrived at a local emergency room, he had an internal temperature of 107 degrees and no signs of life, according to the report. He was pronounced dead shortly before 6 p.m.

The older boy had a temperature of 99 degrees and was able to eat food and drink liquids, the report says. A nurse at the hospital told police that children older than 2 can better regulate their body temperature because they can sweat.
The boy was listed as stable and placed in protective custody, police said in a news release.

If the engine was on it shouldn't have. Thats what the alternator is for. If the engine shuts off for any reason it'll drain the battery real quick though. It sounds like the car ran out of gas, battery drained and the AC shut off. Not that the kid should have been left in that situation in the first place

Watch it turn out she used the gas money for her lips, or intended to use it to get her nails done afterwards
My fancy, modern car (it's 10 years old) will automatically shut off while idling for too long. I think it's 30 minutes? I don't remember exactly, but I was waiting in my car for my wife to get done with some dumb woman stuff in some dumb woman store in the 1,000,000 degree heat, and it just turned itself off.

I was almost sympathetic, when she left the AC on and the car shuts off after an hour (god knows why) , but leaving two infants alone with possibly dirty diapers and no supervision should get her a charge to begin with. Sad it turned out the worst possible way.

Because leaving the AC on without the engine running kills the battery as far as I know.
It shuts off after an hour because there is no fucking reason to leave your car sitting in one place running for no reason. Toyota does this because retards will leave their car like that. It shuts off so that people don't run out of gas or fuck up their car from over heating after 5 hours.

Babies don't start to sweat or cry with tears until they are about four to six months old. Their sweat glands and tear ducts and temperature regulation aren't mature until then. There are any number of articles on the subject for laymen, never mind the medical literature.
I have enough kids to know a sweaty two month old when I'm holding one.

I dunno what the answer is Googling it says infants can start sweating a couple weeks after birth though it takes a while to develop a real effective regulation of body temperature

Long before that happens? It'll run out of cold air.

The air compressor part of the A/C system requires a running engine, the fans you hear run when the key is in "accessory" only move air through the ducts.

Without the compressor? It'll just start blowing hot air in a few minutes as the last cold stuff still in the loop gets expended.

If that fan keeps running? It CAN kill the battery, but, it all depends on how old the battery is, what the weather is like, and how long you let it go.

The A/C cannot run without the engine running.

This is retarded.

If people want to be retarded and let their cars idle to death, they should be able to. There are legitimate reasons to let a car idle. Police do it all the time. It does wear out the engine but as long as you are keeping up with maintenance, it's not really a big deal. I would not be surprised if the auto shutoff has more to do with (a) reducing gas usage, (b) reducing the risk of carbon monoxide build-up in a closed garage, or (c) some other gay environmental concern.

While this woman is absolutely guilty, this whole car turning itself off after a random period of time is looking like a major problem. Modern cars also have a rear seat sensor that can tell if someone is occupying the rear seats. They also have external thermometers. They can easily be programmed to keep the car running if there are still people inside and the temperature is moderate or high.

These people who do this always lie about leaving the car running or how long they abandoned the victims
Yeah I'm doubtful she even left it running. I've had to do some pretty "all day in a car" stuff before and 2 hours of idling with the AC isnt going to run you out of gas unless you're one of those heathens that rides around with your refuel warning light on, in which case you should be getting gas and not lip fillers.

Edit: this was the fuel saving system on a new car, those are inconvenient but it warns you when it's about to shut down and is in the vehicle manual that it will do as much.

The fan still does though which is what I was getting at just wasn’t super specific about it. Ask me how I know leaving shit on when the engine isn’t running kills the battery.
I'll be honest, I've never been able to run the fan in a car without the engine on, so I'm not sure how common that actually is.

I would guess putting the car in neutral can likely force it to stay on.

I don't really care what people do to their cars.

1 person doing it for a reason. 999,999 doing it for no reason.

Letting your car run over heated for hours on end is a big deal because it will damage the engine, hoses, and whatever else is connected to it. Having your car move forward through the air is part of the cooling system and the radiator fan will not be enough air flow. Even for cop cars.

Most people of the 'lip filler' demographic run on bald tyres, need body work, and barely bother with oil changes. Who knows what other maintenance issues they allow to creep up. Letting these retards let their cars run idle is not even close to a big deal. Every car I ever owned never had an issue from idling. Most arguments against idling are more about burning up fuel than permanent engine damage. Sure, if you have a performance car, I could see why you should worry about letting it idle, but for daily drivers this is the type of problem that is sorely overblown.

Ok whatever

I think it’s a matter of context here, and the nurse probably meant that infants hardly sweat enough to make a difference, unlike 2 years and up where the sympathetic nervous system is developed enough so sweating in that case is more efficient.
