You can just install the frankerfaceZ extension (I recommend installing the user script you can use via Tampermonkey) and enable seeing banned messages in the options. I think it's enabled by default but not sure, the options for it are here:

I can't watch Twitch without using FFZ. It allows you block spammy chat messages about gift subs, block dumb badges, and you can use all the BTTV and 7tv emotes.

Also necessary is uBlock Origins with TwitchAdSolutions, although you may have to set your browser user agent to Firefox 33 for it to work properly after some recent change on Twitch's end.

Twitch has automod, which is a combination of Algorithmsto rank how inappropriate messages are, as well as a fixed list of keywords you can filter out.
Filtered messages are not published to the IRC channel, but held for review.
If you combine it with a bot, you can take action on those messages automatically.
