UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Anyone heard about this?

An agent even sent an email to all clients defending themselves against conditional selling (where they won't put forward your offer unless you agree to use their mortgage services and conveyancing) despite not even being mentioned by name in the documentary while skirting around denying conditional selling.

No wonder offers are drying up, these idiots are suppressing property values with this behaviour.
You are a complete fucking idiot and I look forward to your dox being posted in the future. Can you not help but paint a target on your back?

Jo Bacon, an Eastenders' star has died. She was in 2 episodes of Eastenders according to the comments. The daily mail comments are better than the articles.

A bald nigger is the most popular choice to host MasterChef. Who will the co host be to match up to a the chrome dome nigger?

Judging by the fact no one here has been able to accurately guess my household configuration, criminal status, career, location, social class, political compass, or age correctly, I don't think that will be happening.

Not surprised as some agents will refuse you service if you don't have an income of c. £24,000.

Doesn't matter if you have savings, the answer is no.

@Kofi Drinka I'm more surprised that the new host isn't Alison Hammond or RuPaul.

I am just laughing at Ben Wallace schitzo posting, he accused Truss of knowing even though she was not in government. Admitedly Braverman was not a part of it either.

Reforms cursed 5 is most likely to become a four-way again. This time, Lee Anderson has a bust-up with Farage regarding Jake Berry joining. Pochine subsequently fell out with Anderson for not supporting her friend. A lot of this has been shocker linked to Yusef.

It's over for them; they cannot even say something coherent on immigration.

Point of order; Reform are already at 4 MPs. If Anderson or Pochin leave they will be down to 3.

I politely disagree in that's over for us (it's not even begun) but I am frustrated that stupid and needless things like this crop up with Reform UK.

The problem is that the party can't please everybody - they can't be like UKIP under Gerald Batten and appoint Sargon and Dankula (great as that would be IMO) because we've got to appeal to everybody and the world (sadly) isn't Kiwi Farms.

With regards to Jake Berry, the Welsh journalist 'Jac O'The North' has written many articles about him.

Though me and Jac disagree on Brexit, he's a good guy who loves his country and is very much 'Wales out of the UK and out of the EU.'

Berry does come with some question marks, but if he can do good things for Reform UK then I'd bid him a cautious welcome. I'd say the same for somebody like Virginia Crosbie, the former Ynys Mon/Anglesey MP who has also been linked with Reform UK recently.

I can see the sense in bringing experience in - think of Reform UK as a team that's just been promoted to a bigger league... they need a strong backroom staff and people who are like-minded. They can't afford to say 'no' to too many people (though Truss and Bozo Spaffer I do agree with saying no to them - Liz is nice enough as a person but believes that going 'do as I say' equals leadership). In one respect, they need to bring some Labour Leavers over - people who are Socialists and prepared to neither back Starmer nor join Jezbollah.

Some of the Right-Wing might baulk at that, but if Reform UK are to win the next General Election (whenever it happens) we need to be both moderate and sensible - most voters wouldn't care if the dinghy diver numbers went down to zero, as they care more about lower tax and cost of living.

I don't think it's 100% a case of diluting the party, after all Reform UK is just occupying space which has been left by both the Europhile Labour Party, since Kinnock and the Bishop's Stortford coup where the party yeeted Michael Foot out, as well as the Thatcher-era Tory party before it went left under Major. This is now in tune with what the majority wants, and any poll will tell you that Reform UK are flying high and with three days of Parliament left until the recess despite the 'niggles' (yes I spelt that right) life is good for them.

Even if Tice, Anderson etc. quit before the next General Election, the trajectory is upwards because the people want it - they have comprehensively rejected the current Government and all other credible alternatives. This is why I state, despite the guy is great and should be respected for what he's achieved, Farage is not the long term solution and I doubt he'd even want to be - getting in to power, doing the job of PM for 2-3 years and then handing the job to a younger nationalist successor is the important thing.

The only way that Reform UK will be stopped is if Nigel wants it to (and there's very little chance of that) - ironically, if Nigel (and I do not wish it on him nor anybody) was to 'be taken out' by the Left then they'd easily win over 400 seats easily at the next GE.

I'll close with this tidbit of info which I've sourced from a Reform UK insider - Nigel is meeting Donald up in Scotland soon, at the POTUS' request. I would love to hear what they will be discussing, especially with Donald reportedly unhappy with never here Keir that he won't be able to speak to Parliament.

Whichever way people in the UK are going to vote (even if it's for a local Independent candidate) my vote is still for Nigel - for now anyway.

It's not about the men, nor the women, it's about the party and what it entails.

(Awaits Rainbows)

NIGEL FARAGE: Britain can no longer be treated like a charity for the rest of the world
For years, the broadcast media have pushed the narrative that mass migration is a net benefit.
Skilled migrants, we have long been told, will assimilate, strengthen our economy and drive innovation.
What we’ve seen instead has been very different. Mass immigration has inflicted a massive strain on our public services, a surge in crime, a worsening housing crisis and led to fewer British people in work. Those who do pay their taxes are left carrying the burden of supporting those who don’t.
The Department for Work and Pensions yesterday released data showing 1.26million foreign nationals are claiming Universal Credit – costing the British taxpayer more than £12billion per year by some calculations. Of those receiving taxpayer-funded handouts, some 740,000 are unemployed. These figures have doubled in the past three years alone.
This proves there’s something fundamentally wrong with our immigration system. Far too many of those we welcome into this country are not working, overstaying their visas and living off the backs of the British taxpayer.
It is time to send a clear message: the UK is not a soft-touch destination. Arrive in Britain, receive a warm welcome, free housing, free public transport in parts of the country – and you’ll face little-to-no risk of deportation.
When you factor in housing, benefits, healthcare and transportation, the total cost likely runs into the tens of billions.
It is no longer credible to argue that this population explosion has delivered financial benefits or strengthened our economy. On nearly every measure, Britain is weaker and poorer than it was before this influx. The UK has long been one of the world’s most welcoming nations – taking in genuine refugees and providing aid where it’s needed. We’ve opened our doors to nearly 200,000 Ukrainians since the war began, and more than 100,000 Hong Kong citizens fleeing China’s crackdown on civil liberties. While these efforts are part of what makes Britain great, they cannot come at the expense of our own citizens.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) now predicts that Britain’s population will reach 72.5 million by 2032 — an increase of nearly a million per year. This trend has resulted in a number of unfavourable statistics: the NHS backlog for consultant-led elective care is at 7.46 million and the UK now has one of the worst hospital bed shortages of all OECD and European countries.
While Labour has driven the immigration crisis to new heights, most of the blame lies with the Conservatives. Whatever promises they make now cannot be taken seriously.
For years, the Tories peddled the myth that all immigration is positive because migrants work and contribute to society. Quite simply, it was a lie and they knew it – yet they covered it up.
The Tories will never be forgiven for what they have done to our country. They have failed on border security, failed on welfare and failed to deliver for working people. They broke Britain and it will take Reform to fix it.
Under a Reform-led government, we will ban all foreign nationals from receiving benefits. If you want to live in this country, you must work, contribute to society and adhere to our culture. We cannot allow foreigners to benefit off the backs of hard-working Britons while the rest of the country suffers.
Reform will introduce an immediate freeze on all immigration: illegal migrants will be deported and legal migration will pause. When it resumes, we will ensure the UK welcomes only the best and brightest – the world’s top doctors, lawyers and entrepreneurs – in small numbers.
As other countries do, we will thoroughly vet asylum seekers and other migrants and ensure that everyone coming here is willing to integrate, speak our language and respect our way of life. We will no longer allow waves of unchecked, unvetted migrants with no loyalty to Britain or its values to roam our streets freely.
The fundamental duties of any government are to protect its people, improve their lives – and put them first. Politicians work for the people, not the other way round. This principle has been lost. The UK can no longer be treated like a charity for the rest of the world: it is time we prioritised our people, our jobs and our culture.
My pledge to you is simple: freeze immigration, stop all benefits for foreign nationals, deport foreign criminals and put the needs of the British people front and centre. Only Reform can be trusted to do this.
Apologies for no paragraphing. I blame the Daily Mail.

Edit:
1. "Reform will introduce an immediate freeze on all immigration: illegal migrants will be deported and legal migration will pause. When it resumes, we will ensure the UK welcomes only the best and brightest – the world’s top doctors, lawyers and entrepreneurs – in small numbers."
2. "As other countries do, we will thoroughly vet asylum seekers and other migrants and ensure that everyone coming here is willing to integrate, speak our language and respect our way of life. Nah, he's still on message.

Miriam Margolyes, 84, slams 'fury' from JK Rowling critics over trans debate as she backs author's concern (quite a rational take for once, for her!)
Rational?

Harry Potter actress Miriam Margolyes has waded into the ongoing debate surrounding JK Rowling's views on gender identity, criticising the transgender community's reaction whilst disagreeing with the author's stance.
The 84-year-old, who portrayed Professor Sprout in the wizarding films, said: "I don't agree with her about the trans issue. I think her opinion is too harsh but I don't like the fact that the trans community has reacted with such fury."

"It's not good to be so furious. We should be gentle with each other. We're all oppressed by sections of the community."
Speaking on the A Gay Old Time podcast, she concluded: "Let's just be kinder."

The actress, who is gay and an outspoken LGBTQ rights advocate, revealed she has never met Rowling or discussed the matter with her directly.
She acknowledged that whilst she supports trans people, whom she described as "absolutely adorable, gorgeous and brave," she understands concerns about women-only spaces.

"Women get scared if they're in a situation where somebody with a penis could rape them, whether they're straight or gay or whatever," she stated.
"And I think it's a bit unrealistic of blokes who are on the journey from one side to the other not to realise that."

The actress also addressed trans participation in women's sport, saying: "I don't think that people who have a man's body should be playing sports with people who have a woman's body. I just don't think it's fair. There should be another category."
Despite these views, Margolyes maintained her support for trans rights and called for greater understanding between all parties.
The Harry Potter cast remains divided over Rowling's position, with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint having publicly distanced themselves from the author.
Radcliffe stated in 2020 that "transgender women are women" and revealed in 2024 he had not spoken to Rowling in years. Watson and Grint have also expressed support for trans rights.

In April, Rowling declared she would never forgive the younger stars, stating: "Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women's hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces."
However, Tom Felton has maintained his support for Rowling, with the Draco Malfoy actor recently saying: "I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter, and she's responsible for that."
Margolyes rejected binary thinking in the debate, stating: "We're not binary. We're not two boxes.
"There should be many more boxes and we can pop ourselves into them if we want or not.

But we shouldn't be nasty to people who don't fit in the same box as us."
The actress expressed regret that Rowling has been "so fiercely vocal" on the subject, adding: "I really just feel supportive about this tiny group of people who are trans, and if they want me to use pronouns, I think it's the right thing to do. If you can make people happy, do it."

She emphasised her intolerance for bullying in any form, declaring: "That's one thing I will not have - being bullied.
"We've got to nourish love. There's not a lot of love about, which is a pity."
You just read the headline didn't you?

This is exactly the sentiment Rowling expressed when she wrote her open letter and look where she is now. MM is on the journey to understanding, even if she is a complete loon.

I repeat what was in the article.

Remember she's talking about the manic activists here.

"We all need to be kinder" when one side has repeatedly expressed the desire to rape the other to death is a bit further back on Rowling at that point. So adorable. So gorgeous. So brave.
