Grace Lavery / Joseph Lavery & Daniel M. Lavery / Mallory Ortberg - "Straight with extra steps" couple trooning out to avoid "dwindling into mere heterosexuality"

am in the process of reading (and disliking) Thurber

Poor Tard Baby, can’t even appreciate James Thurber, who was witty and wise. He has a useful lesson for her: “When I was a young writer, I liked to imagine that I was paying someone for every word I wrote, rather than being paid for it; it was a fine way to discipline myself to use only those words I needed.”

email me and I’d be very happy to give you one of my author copies.)

Poor Tard Baby, so low on friends she has to give away author copies to total randos.

We did qualify for the Daughters of the American Revolution

Poor Tard Baby, the one club that wants her and she rejects it.

At least Bobby Joe calls her Dada, so there’s that.

Is it double-posting if there’s a day in between? Tard Baby has shared a tiny fragment from her Christmas novella and sure enough, it’s the bit with the proof of her diligent research into the Social Register.

"Lucianne’s name was respectably followed by Wk Ht Dar Cth Cd R Cly. Girls who married into the Register might come or go, but she had been born within the pages of the book, and she would not depart from them while there was $12 to be found in the world."

CNA work is hard (lifting patients into showers) and very, very poorly paid. I’m really shocked she’s doing this because while there’s nothing wrong with being a CNA they don’t have a lot of freedom.

During COVID a facility near me, if a CNA had a high temp when they arrived they’d give them some cranberry juice ‘maybe it’s a UTI’ and take the temp a little later because they didn’t want them to miss a shift.

You kind of can’t call out, at least not soon before your shift, and like these are usually not great environments to work in. I’m glad she’s getting health insurance but I can’t figure out why Mal isn’t teaching at least? The benefits would be better, the pay would be better, she could probably teach at a good private high school and be around people she has much more in common with culturally & educationally.

This thing of “I love to chat! I love to get things for people!” This is going to be more like checking people for bedsores and repositioning them.

I cannot believe these decisions where she makes her life more difficult for no reason. It’s really strange.

Again: nothing against CNAs they do needed work. But the idea that she pissed away that Substack money & must have another book advance & this is her choice? She’s going to be supervised by an LPN, and she’s going to be working with a lot of immigrants, and a lot of those people are probably going to resent her. It’ll probably be difficult socially.

She could teach, she could become an RN, that would all make sense to me. But this is just more self sabotage, and why does she want to under-earn this way?

Also she’s Joe’s legal spouse what does it say that he won’t even add her to his excellent health insurance? This is SO bizarre. This is so strange. Fucking hell Mallory!

Likely because in her head teachers actually have more responsibility, while CNAs just need to show up and do their work as directed. I get the feeling she's absolutely avoiding any sort of positions that would mean she would have to take decisions that she would then be responsible for. She's eternally conflict-avoidant, which is why she's stuck in the Brooklyn Power Throuple and getting walked all over on.

CNAs get like injured on the job though, from lifting people. If you look at the CNA subreddit a lot of it is questions about things like workers comp.

I don’t think she has ANY idea what she’s in for. These programs she signs up for that get cancelled last minute are also a big red flag, telling her this is a not very prioritized job and these places are not very organized.

Also it’s got to be said, this is a very stereotypically female job.

She’s a very feminine woman I don’t know what the Danny cosplay is still about?

She’s writing about women’s hotels and doing childcare and eldercare. She’s actually a very traditional woman doing pretty conservative things, including making herself smaller so her pompous husband doesn’t feel threatened.

Oh *that* I agree with. I just think her reasoning (subconscious or not) is that she won't have any real responsibility in the sense that she'll just do what she's told. If there's a conflict it's up to someone else to take it. Of course, that's not how reality works.

I also guess there's a fear of putting herself out there for teachers jobs and getting rejected. I really wonder how many writing gigs she's gotten by being aggressive versus how many are just favours from people who remember her from The Toast etc.

A CNA class can be run on a whim, if you have the simulators and the curriculum and a captive nurse for a month, so you're right; it's not like cancelling a year of study. They might not have had enough students that month, they might have adequate staff for a while and decided to hold off, or Brenda who teaches it had to have surgery so no CNAs this month.

Community colleges nearly all offer CNA classes (not for credit), but I bet it would give Mal some interesting feelings to be on a campus again, in a different position. Also those classes usually fill more quickly, because they'll have evening classes and because it's easier to make a student account for a community college online than it is to call SNFs one by one and ask if their CNA program is running.

Long-term care CNA is grueling work; SNF maybe less so, hospital CNA probably too fast-paced for Lumberjack Danny. I still think she'd do best at a memory care or assisted living, but that's for her to discover later.

I honestly just assumed it was some kind of writing project. Nicholson Baker wrote a wonderful book about being a substitute teacher. But even by his own admission it took a couple of evening courses and he was off to the races. It was not a 'real' job.

Im not sure she realizes just how much abuse, not to mention literal shit and piss, care workers have to deal with.

A friend of mine worked as an instructor at a German finishing school and was offered good money by one of the families to work for them as a nanny in the UAE. Not easy, handling 4 kids on her own, but she managed well enough for 8 years .

When that was over the grandmother who took a real liking to her and arranged for her to stay as a care worker, which, despite the excellent pay, she only did for around a year before putting in her notice. It was just physically hard, and the became emotionally awful when woman's husband slipped into dementia.

Yep, she said something when announcing her CNA plans about not being able to research people by sitting at her computer. "Research" probably wasn't her word but Novel #4 may be the grannies' death circle. Men will not figure in it much.

Her chat-and-fetch comment creeped me out because it sounded like she viewed patients as audience/ass-patters and inhaling the last of their strength was her goal.

It hasn't sounded like she's ever had a grown-up job. She's talked about student jobs years ago like working the register at a butcher's shop, but then there seems to be a post college "float" where no work stories exist. Was she dependent on her parents for a while after her BA and "marriage"? edit: meaning her first marriage

She's said the Dear Prudence simply landed in her lap. She didn't vie for it. Didn't even think about doing agony aunt work. The editor just called her with an offer and she took it.

So many issues with this.

1. Mal has no relevant experience.
2. Private school jobs are competitive.
3. English is the most competitive subject.
4. Most schools expect that teachers will also coach or supervise extracurriculars.
5. The school year starts next month, so prime hiring season is already over.
6. Googling Mal's name still brings up the Power Throuple article. No respectable high school wants that on their payroll.

It wouldn't be impossible for someone with Mal's background to cleverly pitch themselves as a candidate for a teaching job, but her complete lack of grit and self-worth plus considerable liabilities put her at a disadvantage. She'd be much better off supervising daycare or subbing but for some reason she seems committed to CNA.

I think she'd rather be a teacher's aide for Pre-K - First Grade.

The medical work she wants to do is that of a candy striper afterall. Her idea of "job" seems to be what she thinks cute girls do when not at cheerleading practice. Oh gee yes I'd love to pet-sit your totally adorable pupper while you're in Rome, Mrs. Chandler!

That has got to be the most hideous and ridiculous couch known to man. It's a perfect symbol for BPT life. Thirty years from now Rocco's first NYT bestseller will be called "The Pink Couch".
But this is just more self sabotage
Once you get that Mal is a to the bone masochist everything makes sense.

On a conscious level, probably not. But on an unconscious level, if the hair shirt fits, wear it.

Every FTM/MTF couple is exactly this way.

These are people who have been told from their earliest recollections that it's not cool to be traditional. They admire counterculture, and even though their inclinations are traditional, they hate being like everybody else. So they swap sexes so that their obviously normie relationship seems radical and weird. Wow, the woman is the one who works and neglects her family, and the man is the one taking care of the kid and knitting/writing memoir/buying cute little pets!

Mallory could get a job at a college teaching creative writing, they fucking love hiring “NYT best selling authors” for those positions. Students and admin want a writing teacher who has actually had success in the publishing world, instead of a writer who takes the job because he’s never had any success as a writer.

The more successful the writer the less they actually have to teach. It’s a sweet gig because the college encourages the author to write and gives plenty of time to do so. I don’t think Mallory could any plum or prestigious gig, but she could def get hired by some mid or low level college.

Her name change and troon BS certainly didn’t help any but I also don’t think they’d hurt any at certain colleges. (Esp colleges that seem to specialize in Pooner production)

She could also easily cash in doing those “online coaching” or seminar gigs I see many successful or familiar name writers do. They are cringe af but they sign up all kinds of people who want to be writer or interact and hear pearls of wisdom from an author they like. The self-publishing industry shows how many people believe they need to write about themselves exist and they have money.

She could also do a “writing workshop” seminar circuit.

o.

think Mallory wants to be a “real novelist”. Her big writing success and best selling status come from a “text from Jane Eyre” which is akin to writing “Pride Prejudice and Zombies” she rode a popular trend of mixing modern fad with the literary past. Her other books seem to be navel gazing stuff about herself or based upon other literary works (the original successful formula).

One of the biggest gripes about modern fiction is it smart liberal people writing about other smart liberal ppl and it makes the readers feel very smart for reading it! Its boring af. It’s attracts a limited audience of back patting readers.

Mallory has been among rich liberal Christians, young costal elites and now transgender academics in HCOL cities for 15 years. It’s a safe bubble and an echo chamber which is terrible for a writer. It’s not exactly interesting fodder to write about people that boring, narcissistic and vapid only plagued with middle and upper middle class woes.

Gender fluidity is the extent of the character depth around her. Or I should say it actually could be interesting if she could see them with brutal honesty, but she cannot. (I’m mean she could do a This Is Spinal Tap type novel about costal city trannies but she’s not got the guts or stomach for insightful social satire anymore. Any ability to detect BS, irony and cynicism was surgically removed with her tits, if it ever existed.)

She wants to be a CNA to be around real people who have actual pain or problems. Older people (not even elderly) or working class normies can be easier to be around because they don’t have the expectations and social nuances of her social set, or hyper woke sensibilities. You can even give poor people, or minorities, a pass for thinking and saying things that she would have to banish or warn others about if said by an associate or peer. As a CNA she will meet people of drastically different social brackets, income levels, life experiences, political opinions which is better than research at library archives for characters in a novel. Her ideas about chatting or social interaction might be delusional but maybe she meet a lot of coworkers. Maybe she wants Barbara Ehrenich type experience to write about.

Mallory has never really been outside of safe bubble worlds her entire life. The past year or so has probably been her first experience with a bit of economic struggle, entirely her own fault, but still. She’s got to be sick of writing either about herself or people that lived and died before she was born.
