So many issues with this.
1. Mal has no relevant experience.
2. Private school jobs are competitive.
3. English is the most competitive subject.
4. Most schools expect that teachers will also coach or supervise extracurriculars.
5. The school year starts next month, so prime hiring season is already over.
6. Googling Mal's name still brings up the Power Throuple article. No respectable high school wants that on their payroll.
It wouldn't be impossible for someone with Mal's background to cleverly pitch themselves as a candidate for a teaching job, but her complete lack of grit and self-worth plus considerable liabilities put her at a disadvantage. She'd be much better off supervising daycare or subbing but for some reason she seems committed to CNA.
Mallory could get a job at a college teaching creative writing, they fucking love hiring “NYT best selling authors” for those positions. Students and admin want a writing teacher who has actually had success in the publishing world, instead of a writer who takes the job because he’s never had any success as a writer.
The more successful the writer the less they actually have to teach. It’s a sweet gig because the college encourages the author to write and gives plenty of time to do so. I don’t think Mallory could any plum or prestigious gig, but she could def get hired by some mid or low level college.
Her name change and troon BS certainly didn’t help any but I also don’t think they’d hurt any at certain colleges. (Esp colleges that seem to specialize in Pooner production)
She could also easily cash in doing those “online coaching” or seminar gigs I see many successful or familiar name writers do. They are cringe af but they sign up all kinds of people who want to be writer or interact and hear pearls of wisdom from an author they like. The self-publishing industry shows how many people believe they need to write about themselves exist and they have money.
She could also do a “writing workshop” seminar circuit.
o.
Yep, she said something when announcing her CNA plans about not being able to research people by sitting at her computer. "Research" probably wasn't her word but Novel #4 may be the grannies' death circle. Men will not figure in it much.
Her chat-and-fetch comment creeped me out because it sounded like she viewed patients as audience/ass-patters and inhaling the last of their strength was her goal.
It hasn't sounded like she's ever had a grown-up job. She's talked about student jobs years ago like working the register at a butcher's shop, but then there seems to be a post college "float" where no work stories exist. Was she dependent on her parents for a while after her BA and "marriage"? edit: meaning her first marriage
She's said the Dear Prudence simply landed in her lap. She didn't vie for it. Didn't even think about doing agony aunt work. The editor just called her with an offer and she took it.
think Mallory wants to be a “real novelist”. Her big writing success and best selling status come from a “text from Jane Eyre” which is akin to writing “Pride Prejudice and Zombies” she rode a popular trend of mixing modern fad with the literary past. Her other books seem to be navel gazing stuff about herself or based upon other literary works (the original successful formula).
One of the biggest gripes about modern fiction is it smart liberal people writing about other smart liberal ppl and it makes the readers feel very smart for reading it! Its boring af. It’s attracts a limited audience of back patting readers.
Mallory has been among rich liberal Christians, young costal elites and now transgender academics in HCOL cities for 15 years. It’s a safe bubble and an echo chamber which is terrible for a writer. It’s not exactly interesting fodder to write about people that boring, narcissistic and vapid only plagued with middle and upper middle class woes.
Gender fluidity is the extent of the character depth around her. Or I should say it actually could be interesting if she could see them with brutal honesty, but she cannot. (I’m mean she could do a This Is Spinal Tap type novel about costal city trannies but she’s not got the guts or stomach for insightful social satire anymore. Any ability to detect BS, irony and cynicism was surgically removed with her tits, if it ever existed.)
She wants to be a CNA to be around real people who have actual pain or problems. Older people (not even elderly) or working class normies can be easier to be around because they don’t have the expectations and social nuances of her social set, or hyper woke sensibilities. You can even give poor people, or minorities, a pass for thinking and saying things that she would have to banish or warn others about if said by an associate or peer. As a CNA she will meet people of drastically different social brackets, income levels, life experiences, political opinions which is better than research at library archives for characters in a novel. Her ideas about chatting or social interaction might be delusional but maybe she meet a lot of coworkers. Maybe she wants Barbara Ehrenich type experience to write about.
Mallory has never really been outside of safe bubble worlds her entire life. The past year or so has probably been her first experience with a bit of economic struggle, entirely her own fault, but still. She’s got to be sick of writing either about herself or people that lived and died before she was born.
