Mike & the boys point out that James Gunn is best at writing the asshole characters and really seems to gravitate towards them. Which is... very true. And when you watch those characters and listen to Gunn talk, it becomes clear that the reason he gravitates towards them is that Gunn himself is an asshole, but he wants to believe he's an asshole with a heart of gold. "Yeah, I may not be the kindest or nicest, but I'm still a good person deep down." is pretty much how Gunn views himself and how he writes his favorite characters.
I wasn't a fan of the show, and I think the quote is definitively proved wrong later in the show, but sometimes, I think people really oversell the whole 'deep down' thing. "That's the thing. I don't think I believe in 'deep down'. I kind of think all you are is just the things that you do." Diane, S1E12 of Bojack Horseman
His take on the Western is far stupider. It lingers in culture because it's American mythology.
Two massive video games of the 2010's were the Red Dead Redemption games, both of which were financial and critical hits. Films like Unforgiven and the True Grit remake were both incredibly well received. Not to mention you have neo-Westerns like Hell or High Water or No Country for Old Men. Aside from the American mythology and Americana of the old West, one of the factors that really works is how ungoverned it was. Men have to take matters into their own hands, and that makes for great characters.

"You must pay for everything in this world, one way or another. There is nothing free, except the grace of God."
-True Grit

I don't know where that "blue states pay for red states" jazz comes from, but I firmly stand by the opinion that the red states survive without the blue, but the blue states are dead without the red.
I think it stems from the concept that Red State farmers are subsidized (but so are farmers in the Blue states!) because that's how the US keeps food cheap(er) for the grocery stores, but since Blue states are more populous, they determined that therefore the "Majority" living in Blue states are handing taxpayer dollars disproportionately to Red States.

And Bob's so stupid, that he thinks Red State Farm Ghouls absolutely can't survive without a few bucks from Uncle Sam.

only "wit" Moviebob usually employs is "ask yer mum", and that's just a lazy response.
The perfect :epik: response to that would be, "I don't have to. If you'd been ANYWHERE NEAR my mum, my father would take extreme exception because it would clearly be break-and-enter plus attempted rape, and the last thing you'd ever see would be the number 357 and you wouldn't be talking to me right now."

The western will probably never go away completely; it's simply too ingrained in the American psyche, much more so than the Revolution itself -- maybe because the Founding Fathers were by and large the aristocracy of the time, but anyone can decide to light out for the Territories, as Mark Twain so beautifully put it. The urge to roam, to cast off civilization and see if you can tame the wild, is really one of the core elements of the American character. One of the reasons his dismissal of earlier takes on the Western than the Civil War rankles so much is that you can see the same ethos in the writings of James Fenimore Cooper, he of the Leatherstocking Tales. The Last of the Mohicans was written 40 years before the Civil War, takes place in 1757, and is set in Upstate New York, of all places ... but that was the frontier at the time, and Natty Bumppo is the quintessential frontiersman. You can see elements of him in all the Westerns Bob cites and all the way up to the neo-Westerns you mention.

This fucker knows nothing, and will force whatever topic he's blathering about into a Procrustean bed of his limited understanding. I don't think he even really does research; I think he just looks up whatever will support his conclusions and goes not one inch beyond.

People loved the first game so much that they wanted a PC port for years and were relegated to emulating the PS3 and Switch versions until said port was released. Then again, Bob didn't play either of those games.

I am irrationally angry about him using the "Aw shit, here we go again" meme when he's on record as hating GTA (and, undoubtedly, not playing them to any meaningful degree).

The Western is so ubiquitous that the popular image of a cowboy is still that of a gunslinger going around having Mexican standoffs with outlaws instead of an actual cattle wrangler. The genre will likely not reach the heights it had in the past, but it'll never truly go away. Bob's entire livelihood is based around talking about pop culture history, yet he's so supremely awful at it. I doubt he even reads Wikipedia articles but rather just skims through them before quickly shitting out his next video.

There was a Game Overthinker he did where he talked about GTA 4 being more serious than the others, and he spent the time he talked about SA trying to not shit on it too much, constantly insisting "but I love it" as he talked about how much he hated the 90s gangster story, despite it only being part of the game, which he'd know if he actually played it.

I wish we had a list of games Bob has actually owned just so we can know how full of shit he really is.

l. It's the frontier spirit, combined with the unique visual appeal of America west of the Rockies. He dismisses the setting as something that was done because it was so close to L.A., but the fact is if you hail from anywhere in the eastern regions of the US (which was most of the country pre-California's population boom) then that landscape is both totally alien and totally enchanting. John Ford knew that -- anytime he goes to Monument Valley it'll take your breath away.
Reminds me of the liner notes Harold Budd, an LA native, wrote for his album The Serpent in Quicksilver.

I'm in love with California place names. Burroughs calls them places of dead roads. I don't call them anything but it is the same thing -- haunted, lonely places: fat with history and totally forgotten: Cantil, Inyo, Olancha, Cartago, obsidian shards at Dunmovin, the Lost Gunsight Mine, Skidoo, White Mountain City... fat with dreams.

Yeah I want to know who are the "damaged psychotic weirdos" too. Dealing drugs is de rigueur in Hollywood. Daniel Radcliffe might prefer unconventional projects but he is well-adjusted and has a girlfriend. Emma Watson is just a golddigging skank. She is common but I won't call her "psychotic"

He also extends that to everyone who lives/works in a red state. Not only are all the farmers on crop subsidies? But every single blue-collar job is also somehow subsidized with tax rebates or government contracts to buy their "useless" stuff, and every single person gets welfare for their meth habit.... meanwhile the millions in Federal outlays spent by big cities on welfare and civic frivolities like pride parades or outdoor art displays? Or any one of a dozen hulking education/transportation bureaucracies that are billions in debt with failing public faces? Are either ignored or dismissed as a mere drop in the bucket of the total tax burden. Only money destined for the reds had better uses, like feeding the poor.... blue monies are being spent on the absolute necessities and cannot be questioned.

The chinese tractors alone make the whole series worth it.

Then when they put them in the hospital room because he had to have that scene...

One of the best things made in the last year. Shame Bobby never commented on it. Probably hit too close to his precious Marvel. (or he didn't get it)

I was almost sure that they would have had compared the strength of their love to a chinese tractor but the outcome was funnier than that. The show really didn't pull any punches and when I said that none of the characters was too unlikeable, I think Dab was insufferable but she gets screwed by the studio so it evens out. Another joke that had me laughing way more than it should have was the make a wish foundation.

For context, the studio has a photo op with a make-a-wish type of foundation. The twist is that they are filming in Bosnia, the "child" in question is 17 years old, taller than the superhero cast and when asked what's his disease the parents hastily say, "Long Covid". Since the Pandemic was the most deadly disease ever and you were killing grandma if you didn't quadrupple mask and quintuple vax, Bob would have called the show a "right-wing dogwhistle".

Another reason why Bob would have hated it was because there is no bathos and the show is not gen-x, whedon cynical. The main cast are cynical as all hell, they know they are in a B-series movie that only stands on it's own as part of a cog in the marvel corporate machine, an in-between flick that serves as a quick cash-grab from the whales and die-hard fans. At the same time, their pride makes them give their best in every scene they are doing. The actors don't diminish their roles but don't pretend they are divas either, the director wants to make a true and solid script and does his best to please everyone and the assistant director keeps the show running. They are assholes but professionals that take their craft seriously, it's quite nice compared to quip-fests (you know the type, the ones that reddit felates dusk till dawn).

Sneed more Bob, you will never get it.

Accounting is more art than science but not every dollar spent has the same outcome. There are multiple charts showing which jobs generate higher added value to the economy compared to others. That's the reason why meat packing plants were still open on March 15th 2020 while all of Manhattan's baristas got the boot. A dollar spent by big fed has ripples in the local and state economy, that is without question. Which is why there are competitive bids for grants that require a business case on what will you do with X monies and don't just say, "lower my labour unit costs". It's implied that if you spend 1B on an industry then the GDP will grow by 1xB. I'm not talking about revenue from taxation, I mean economic activity, production, secondary industries, etc, etc. Money changing hands, things being done. The blue states ((((services)))) industries move massive amounts of money but what is your output? if you get X monies will you move more TPS reports? What does moving the TPS reports do? It's the same as getting a check for free money (which is why there was a push for UBI, if I know youre job is fake and you know your job is fake, why bother with the 40 hour week? just give it to me already).

What's better? pouring money to incentivize a supply that may end up in a ditch? or just giving out pocket change and hope it creates demand out of thin air? I honestly don't know. Getting X monies can be a lifesaver during a time of crisis for some families and having a make-work job is always better than no job so I won't go all boomer "pull yourself by yer bootstraps!!1".

So again, let's disect why Bob is dumb: comparing goverment spend, pound for pound, without asking WHERE is just dumb. Cities are net wealth creators because of the aforementioned (((services))) but that's like comparing an oil refinery with theme park. What happens if one closes? You know the answer. And that's not mentioning the per capita problem. Bob has nigger-tier undertading of economics where he thinks that Big Number = better. Just because you live in the same state as Bill gates means that you're suddenly a millionaire. Densely populated areas are not wealthier, that's the cope that all Indians on /pol/ are posting: SAAR, highest median household income SAAAAR.

Ok Ranjit, you still live 20 to a room.

Seeing how much Bob is gushing about the Superman movie, I'm left wondering: What does Bob think of The Elite storyline in Superman #775?
He references it all the time but more from covers and the meme panels. You can tell he doesn't "get" it.

In his opinion Superman is the good guy because he's good and justified. So anything he does is good.

Really you look at some of his circular logic and his "advance degree theology" starts to make more "sense."

Dab was so brilliantly done and written. You kind of end up not liking her, at first, but then you kind of do.

Whoever wrote the show was a genius. Whenever you were supposed to hate someone, the show would have someone else be sympathetic. When 1 guy was unlikeable, another you started to root for. So you never stopped watching because you just always ended up liking someone for at least an episode - even if you'll hate the later.

Do you think the assistant girl actually slept with the newly wedded background extra? Given her general behavior, i think she was making it up.

She was nuttier than a granola bar. In the first episode she had a codependent relationship with the director and the extra didn't seem like the guy that would cheat. I think she just stirred drama for the hell of it.

and you're right, you end up feeling for Dab, when she freaks out for an episode about going to an albanian prison. I also laughed way too much when The Cameo was busting the lead character's balls:
"Adam was just ranking all races by sexual attractiveness" and Richard Grants response was a childlike glee, "I like his energy". It was not only fun, after knowing what kind of character Grant was it just makes perfect sense for these two to click.

Man. I wish we could have had a watch party together. I like the cut of your jib.

I still laugh at the "they poop in a bucket. I'm going to jail and I'm going to poop in a bucket."

The revelation that grant was TRYING to get canceled came at just the right moment and made so many of his earlier scenes even funnier on a rewatch.
