I wasn't a fan of the show, and I think the quote is definitively proved wrong later in the show, but sometimes, I think people really oversell the whole 'deep down' thing. "That's the thing. I don't think I believe in 'deep down'. I kind of think all you are is just the things that you do." Diane, S1E12 of Bojack HorsemanMike & the boys point out that James Gunn is best at writing the asshole characters and really seems to gravitate towards them. Which is... very true. And when you watch those characters and listen to Gunn talk, it becomes clear that the reason he gravitates towards them is that Gunn himself is an asshole, but he wants to believe he's an asshole with a heart of gold. "Yeah, I may not be the kindest or nicest, but I'm still a good person deep down." is pretty much how Gunn views himself and how he writes his favorite characters.
Two massive video games of the 2010's were the Red Dead Redemption games, both of which were financial and critical hits. Films like Unforgiven and the True Grit remake were both incredibly well received. Not to mention you have neo-Westerns like Hell or High Water or No Country for Old Men. Aside from the American mythology and Americana of the old West, one of the factors that really works is how ungoverned it was. Men have to take matters into their own hands, and that makes for great characters. His take on the Western is far stupider. It lingers in culture because it's American mythology.
"You must pay for everything in this world, one way or another. There is nothing free, except the grace of God."
