For the most part, Buddhism was gone from India by the time the British arrived. It was already in decline in the 11th century, before the Muslim invaders gleefully slaughtered what was left of them. British and European scholars did a lot to preserve and revive interest in Buddhism. In the early 20th century, there were Buddhist revival movements in India, particularly among dalits, that emphasized its critique of the caste system. Still, there was simply no way Buddhism could outpace Hinduism from a demographic standpoint.Heck, half of India would be Catholic and Buddhist if it wasn't for the British Empire promoting Hinduism.
