Well it also mechanically addresses the desire to save scum. By making it a built in aspect of the story you no longer feel cheated when undesirable results happen from seemingly innocuous answers and you also don't feel like you're cheating when you go back to change an answer.

Which is why its very strange that DontNod kept making sequels about new powers that didn't directly interact or modify the existing mechanics of the branching choose your own adventure story structure.
