If he knew he might be implicated in "the files" why would he allow them to be such a strong flavour in his campaign? Could be that he thought acting nonchalant about it and promising more information was the best way to deflect suspicion and quell the public unease about it. Of course another plausible answer is he's retarded and senile.

Oh, there are tons of plausible scenarios.

1. He really is that stupid and didn't think he was on the list.

2. He knew he was on the list but thought people would forget about it, much like lock her up, build the wall, Obama's long-form birth certificate and all the rest of his greatest hits.

3. He knew he was on the list, it would be edited beforehand to remove his involvement, but then someone got hold of it and could release the real one. Could be Elon, could be just some random person in the DOJ or FBI.

4. Barr destroyed all the evidence, nobody bothered to tell Trump until recently.

5. The list implicates too many members of Likud so Mossad said no.

All we really know is that Trump campaigned on releasing it and Bondi did her stupid photo op and now the list is somewhere between nonexistent or a Democratic hoax. So, yes, something happened, but what exactly happened is not clear.
