A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Reading back over the domestic abuse discussion from a few days ago. It's hard to know what is domestic abuse and isn't because a lot of relationships are unhealthy but equally as abusive in ways that aren't abusive for those people. There are some couples who cannot help but argue all day long, it may even boil over and involve minor violence occasionally but they couldn't live without each other. Even if you took them apart they would find a way to get back together. As long as it never gets to the point someone needs medical attention they're better off left alone in their council flat with their pitbull. We've all met some scum and know how they live and even if it's illegal, it's how they will behave.

Modern domestic violence activism has tried to criminalize normal behaviour. You see signs saying if your boyfriend controls your money or who you hang out with he's abusing you. Every normal relationship has money being controlled. No, you cannot buy the new Fifa this month or no, we don't need another cushion we have bills to pay. There are some people you don't want your other half to be around, maybe ex partners or a dodgy friend who is really bad for them. And you have to tell them to stay away because they're more trouble than their worth. These are normal things that happen in relationships and now every NHS toilet is telling you to give the staff a secret code name if it's happened to you.

Real domestic violence is complex. The victims are often looking to be abused or are convinced it's what they deserve after it going on so long. They have issues outside of the situation and it becomes very messy to deal with as a first hand witness. The police having to deal with it makes it even worse. You can't stop them going back to their abusive partners or dropping charges. The activists make it so much harder to help the real victims because no one is even sure what real abuse is any more and the people being abused often feel like they aren't a priority. Blokes get battered by Pat Butcher and won't speak up because everyone is talking about Little Moe and Trevor.

Everyone has the potential to be abusive and to be abused. If you meet the wrong person they can turn you into something terrible on either end of the spectrum. The manliest of men can meet a really nasty BPD who isolated them from everything and keeps them in her web. The nicest bloke in the world can meet a woman who keeps trying to push his buttons because she's looking to be abused and he eventually snaps. We're all vulnerable and we should understand that. In Sargonland (Swindon) there's a low bridge to the east of the railway station which has suffered many such 'bridge bash' incidents over the years - however, tarmacing the road post crash has also lowered the height even more.

I'm guessing you're either not British descent, or you're 10 years old because Britain has historically, for hundreds of years, played by the rules no-one played by and that's how we won the world. While the faggy europeans were shooting at us with low-skill crossbows, we were training for years to master the British Longbow.
