A well-off old client of mine when I worked in pure tech came to see me and asked me to do the migration for hew new Macbook. Despite the fact that I am not purely in tech. any longer, I couldn't say no, as she is 90 years old and a very nice old lady. So I asked her why she needed the migration done, and she showed me the other system which to me looked like the identical twin to the new one. She said the screen had broken on the old one and rather than hassle with getting it repaired she just bought a new one (well-off people operate differently than the rest of us I guess...) The new one was a Macbook Air M4, the old system was a Macbook Air M2. The migration was painless (despite the damaged screen) and only took about 30 minutes. I handed her back the brand new M4 fully migrated and she was happy.
I asked her what she wanted me to do with the M2, if she wanted me to erase it, part it out, put it up on eBay for her for whatever it was worth damaged, just hand it back to her as is, etc... She told me she hadn't even thought a about it, she gave it about 30 seconds of thought as said I could just keep it since she had no use for it. I said "Um... Ok" and she left to go back to her cats.
After digging around in the system I found out that it was still in practically brand new condition (minus the screen...) since it lived with this old lady, never went anywhere, and she only used Chrome to play online games. Once I got into the System Settings, I found out it was actually still under AppleCare+ warranty for another 6 months. So, I could replace the screen for $99 by sending it to Apple (the nearest Apple store is over an hour away from me) and they would replace the screen.
I have to say, I can see now why some people like Macs and pay what they do for them. For $99 they overnighted the box to send it to them pre-paid, again, overnight, they got it the next day, they had it for 12 hours and completed the repair and had it back to me literally the next day. That is a level of service that I wasn't aware still existed. So, now I have what is practically a brand new Macbook Air M2 and I have no idea what to do with it.
I'm a Windows and Linux person, the last Mac I used and actually liked was the Classic Macintosh II in the 68k era running System 7.1.1 (hugs his Mac Classic II), after that, IMO, Macs went to shit. Plus, I have all the systems I could possibly need. I literally cant think of any use for it in my IT ecosystem.
So, for the Apple/Mac Kiwi's here, is there anything I can do with this thing, compared to a Windows/Linux system, that would justify keeping it or should I just throw it up on eBay so it can find a better home? I know very little about Apple Silicon systems. My knowledge of Macbooks ended with their last Intel systems.
