Hot Topic doesn't even sell Zim merchandise anymore. At least where I live. I wonder if they're going to use material from the canceled episodes. Considering the comics have mostly abandoned the show's goth roots (in a good way) I wonder if the movie will do the same.

Nah, I think you're right. I haven't gone to a Hot Topic in quite some time, but the last time I was there, I didn't recall once seeing GIR anywhere, which I thought was odd.

That's a good point. I honestly wonder how much they're going to be able to get away with in terms of the sci-fi-horror aspect, since it was a wonder the show even aired to begin with. (I don't see them going the way of something like "Dark Harvest" again, but apparently the comics still show shades of it from what I've read about it.)

Yeah I suppose it's been a long time since HT did that.

I was a fan of the show when it was first on (I came to it during its last days), but I'm sure I'm not the only one that now just doesn't care any more.

Nah - invader Zim was just that thing that was there for me when nothing else was on. Most definitely not a show I'm fond of, either. Like most cartoons I watched in the 2000s, it's one of my least favorite shows of all time, actually.

I didn't come here to post that unpopular opinion, however. I just wanted to share this and hear some thoughts on it from you guys...

Oh, and here's some salt from a potential lolcow about it, too.
P.S.: I must reiterate this guy really has some lolcow potential.

This cartoon is pretty dull.

The animation is so weird, their movement seems too fluid yet too stiff at the same time. It really messes with my eyes.

That might have been their intention. But I won't lie, even if it was, it is pretty ugly.
It definitely feels intentional in how it's designed and rendered. Animation obviously is going for that 2's approach to movement the way action isn't shown as fluid as possible. I can see how some may find this interesting for it's "slice of life" pace and it's message of tolerance such as the way our main character is viewed by his peers. This is definitely not meant as a 'funny' show by any stretch of the word aside from the oddity of a large, green monster in a real world/live-action setting.

The eye thing didn't bother me oddly, but I suppose I'm too used to seeing that out of similar stuff before. Perhaps it reminded me too much of Totoro.

If there's one thing the short does commit though, and is rather a bit of contention for many in the industry, is yet another cartoon about a kid in school. I know a few animators who simply loathe to work on the same dribble over and over because that's all execs. think kids are into these days. Nobody ever wants to have a kid do something that's not in school, or in their neighborhood, adventurous stuff of course. I suppose quite a good number still want to tell these down-to-earth tales in odd ways.

One of the reasons I find Steven Universe watchable is specifically because he's not in school and so the usual "underage defender of the world but still has to turn in homework tomorrow" routines are completely subverted.

I bet it was a breath of fresh air to not deal with 'normal kid problems' there.

Because God hates us....

EDIT: It seems like the only way to keep these guys around is to put out these "7 year old wetdreams" as I put it, namely the idea that a kid may actually think it was a cool idea to stick T&J in with their favorite movie, only to come around as an adult and realize what an awful idea that was, this is what has been going on lately with these videos.

On the plus side, at least it's still 2D animation and Tom and Jerry aren't talking.

On the other hand, it's not good 2D animation ("favorite" shot from the trailer):

--and it's fan fiction as @Trilby said. I think of all the T&J direct-to-videos based off of classic movies, this one's probably the most shameless in how blatant it is.

*sigh* I feel so bad older cartoons are getting these treatments. Animation's never going to live down its "It's for kids" stigma.

I don't remember Charlie having that wide gap in his mouth!

Oh, it is. You know some mom's gonna get this for her kids for sure!

nope.

It would have it with or without.

At least it's not the Johnny Depp version. That much I can say.

They keep doing all these Tom and Jerry movies where they put them into various situations to little effect, and none of them are very good. Though the recent sequel they did to the Tom and Jerry Wizard of Oz film gets points from me for including the Nome King and the Hungry Tiger. Somebody did their research.

So when can we expect a T&J/Scooby-Doo crossover?
