Eh. I mean, on the one hand creatures mimicking people in the woods is getting a little trite, but on the other hand I like how it messes with your mind and memories to further mess with you. That's not even going into how the narrator is the true villain of the story. Motherfucker not only manages to sabotage the hike (multiple times!) but by the end almost has everyone killed, all through his own anxiety self-loathing.

The actual fleshgait itself, as a character within in the story, leaves a lot to be desired. Besides taking their stuff and all the mindfuck, it's hardly more than some emaciated animal that awkwardly follows the group because it knows they have food, and no matter what they do to scare it away it always comes right back. You need more there. Give it a more active presence in the story (like the Thing) or give it some kind of crazy design that it tries to hide from the group. Anything, really.

I actually liked the idea of the creatures slowly wearing them down through paranoia and deprivation until they either drop dead from exhaustion or turn on one another, which is kind of what happens at the end, (but maybe not?) It makes them a bit more menacing than "Uh yeah so it's another generic monster that kills you in a brutal hyper realistic fashion or whatever" which were all the rage in the 2010s

I rather liked the ending of that last one. That moment of self-reflection where the narrator is admitting that it genuinely felt like he was choosing to kill his true love and he still did it without hesitation was effective. A creepypasta equivalent to that anecdote about the agent being handed an (unknowingly) empty gun and told to execute his wife/dog/family member just to prove he's loyal. There's something kind of chilling about that blunt realization that you're the sort of person who can kill something you previously thought you should be willing to give your life for.

Oh nice I haven't been keeping up with Creepcast or Wendigoon that much in general, and I come back to find out they covered a story I know and like. Just going on the story it's not super amazing, but it's a nice setup for what a Fleshgait is and how it can mess with you. I'm having to fight a lot of tism to not go into retard details about my own headcanon of the internet spooky monster.

I'll need to give this episode a listen.

Finally got through the fan story episode

Loss of Innocence: lol. lmao even. I laughed out loud just thinking about it. If you told me it was satire lampooning shitty creepypastas I'd believe it. Short and sweet, made all the better by the fact that the author deleted their account either as part of the gag or for whatever other reason

The Missing Person I'm Looking For Doesn't Exist: Solid, enjoyed it. I really liked the 'close' and 'the wrong question' one-liners

I've Discovered a Book That Does Not End: Eh. It's fine. I did like the narrator losing their faith since the book never mentioned god

The Nursing Home at the End of the World: Didn't really pay enough attention to it so I need to re-listen to it, I did like how part 1 ended, enough so that I'm going to do my best to pay more attention next time

Fleshgait: Actually very spoopy to me. I have a couple of memories that my family swears didn't happen so fake/implanted memories is something legitimately terrifying to me. Unironically my greatest fear, so a good story exploring that is perfect. 'Jerry' was great, as was the 'friend' with MS whose name I can't remember off the top of my head. Loved all of this guy's stories so far

I think that author dose good work but his redditisms really bring them down for me. "I have these mental problems" and "member this drumph story" shit is the hight of reddit cringe.

The MC gets half busy and/or actually fucked a skinwalker and the story kinda glossed over that other than "ew gross yucky I Spilled my guts to it like a loser retard". Or maybe that's just how I interpreted it because I certainly would have been more upset over kissing and fondling a shape-shifting skinsuit monster than he acted.

I do like how he would just toss in a new name to the group, but those new names never lasted long enough or did anything other than immediately be pointed out as "others" to make any real impact. It's just "the implication" without actually playing with it. At least until it gets to when he brains his girlfriend. That's the only one where we're given any effort towards making us think MAYBE she was actually could have maybe been in the group. But then he essentially shuts it down and confirms it was a skinwalker by saying "but it doesn't matter because I FEEL like I killed my GF and that's bad enough right?".

I give the story a "fascinating premise" out of 5.

I wonder if there are more Fleshgait stories that actually expand upon the concept because almost all are standard "Oh someone is pretending to be my friend but we spooked it!"

For me part of the spoop is that the brother's friends were potentially fleshgaits too. Some got caught easily enough, but I think the goal was trying to escape the forests, rather than trapping/killing lost hikers. Even Ian's girlfriend might have been one, and based on the way Ian's memories of the trip stopped matching reality I think that's even likely. Very open to interpretation, obviously, but that's why mindfuckery is such a fun concept for a story when it's done well. Fleshgaits as a parasite vs a predator, basically

one thing I like about the fleshgaits is that they're not super strong or anything, if you had guns you could kill all of them
So instead of attacking they just lead the group deeper into the woods till they're soo weak they can kill them

My eyes are rolling into the back of my head from annoyance at the start of Part 4, and then I see it has a whole ass other part. I'm having to psyche myself up to keep listening. The Banter is good. I felt Hunter checked out too soon for like 3 minutes, then I was right there with him lol

I know all the reddit stories have redditisms and shit, but Spire in the Woods turned me off of the story in the first like half hour with how many it kept cramming in the start of the story. I tapped out and have never looked back.

Usually, their end of episode "It's not all bad" cope session just upsets me, but I do agree Church in the Woods feels like a first draft. That's obviously no shield from criticism and a story getting shit on. You posted the first draft, and you get dunked on.
