It's called an em-dash, and it's a wonderful punctuation mark—and I think others would agree.

It works like parentheses—although, unlike with those, you only need one em-dash if the parenthetical phrase begins or terminates at either end of the sentence—that add rather than subtract emphasis.

Personally I recommend keeping one in your phone's clipboard—as well as in a text document on your computer.
