I've never even seen her mentioning using an ereader, I have the feeling she might be a total "real books only" snob. Sure, you can read ebooks on your tablet or phone as well, but if she read ebooks, she surely would have a separate fancy gadget. I agree that she really does not read that much at all.
She's absolutely not a reader, but she's continuing her fit over Daniel "stealing" her books. I'm guessing this has been a constant subject of Becky's ire BTS, and someone said "you know, you can always use the library to get reading material" - at which point it was BIG SIGH because her cards are expired.

Depends on where you live. Rural America won't blink an eye at kids walking a few miles away from home alone. Once you get to cities or suburbia, parents will have CPS called if their preteens are on their front lawns alone or walking to a corner store without supervision.

In many cities (NYC being a notable exception) public transit is for fuck-ups who have lost their license, poors who can't afford to get their car fixed, or the disabled who have no other option. Which then furthers the perception that "only weirdos are on the bus, it's better to drive and I certainly wouldn't let my kids around that riff-raff" which results in further loss of funding and routes. Often there's no public transit stop near the school. Instead the school itself provides transport (yellow schoolbuses are the classic option, but smaller blue vans are also becoming common in some places) from a set of designated stops directly to the school and back.
They probably expired ages ago and she never checked until today. Now it's ANOTHER CRISIS, despite her not caring about them for likely several years.
I fully expect Becky to have Cecily Kellogg's sensibilities on parenting & education. I'd say worse, but worse than Cecily is an extremely heavy lift (pun fully intended).

Time for a little spell of what I like to call touch grass. Live in an American city, take American city bus, see herds of middle and high school students boarding at rush hour every morning.
Not to mention the terrain. I’m not from a mountainous part of the US, but it would be dangerous if not impossible to walk the 2 miles from my home to my high school. Sidewalk-less roads with no room to walk next to the lane, and on the other side of the metal barriers are very steep wooded hills.
