A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I certainly won't be voting for them, but I'm glad they will split the Left vote.

I personally would love a BLM party, LGBTQ+ party, Social Justice Party, Trans Party etc. to form as well and split it even more.

I actually watched the video (for once…) and he says it’s a non denominational Christian charity that runs the lodge, it’s aimed at low socioeconomic kids from around Nottingham, and it’s used by Pentecostal/evangelicals a lot.
Nottingham has a large and well established black (Caribbean) community that has a lot of such kids and a big Bangladeshi community as well. Unlikely the Muslim community sides would be going to a Christian church charity, so it’s more likely it was black kids from Lenton.
Be interesting to see what comes out of this.

So in other news, Starmer is U-turning on Palestine already. LESS THAN 24 FUCKING HOURS!


He basically renegged and said how the hostage reclamation was part of the long-standing deal, when it was not.

Even the left of the party doesn't agree with this and with the OSA and Trump. I think Starmer is starting to realize America is pissed. Trump said in an interview yesterday that Starmer did not talk about Palestine at all, and this decision "surprised" him. Now he is threatening US citizens with fines and kidnapping over hurtful words. I can see Trump sending Vance and Rubio as an envoy to tell him what he thinks.

He can't risk pissing off America at the moment, with an IMF bailout needed as the IMF is largely US-controlled.

Anything that splits the Leftoid vote and arsefucks Labour is all to the good.

Personally, I'm a bit of a racist, and there's nobody I could vote for who represents my views. So if I vote it will be for whoever might represent me best in Parliament.

Divide lefties between labour and the new shit.
Right leaning people have all abandoned the 'conservative' (still actually liberal) tory party and gone to reform.
Unless labour and corbyn go into one of those joint governments then labour are completely fucked, and judging by the fact that corbyn started the party seemingly because labour are so shit I doubt that would even be a thought he'd entertain. Plus they would have to actually win for that to happen anyway.

It'll likely become the "Muslim party" in all but name, absorbing into it Corbyn's "Independent Alliance" and with it likely running with the "Left Party" name + Labour ostracising younger voters by proudly claiming the Online Safety Bill as their own, it'll probably give Labour fewer voters and prevent Green and The Lib Dems from gaining a substantial share of the under-18s vote - that's not even mentioning how it'll impact Muslim voters, who'll either flock to the party en masse or get torn in two between it and supporting Independents who can form a party in all but name. The hope is that it'll fucks over Labour and the rest of the Left giving Reform/The Right even greater odds of securing a huge majority.

The alternative is as you describe and it'll do nothing in the grand scheme, occupying the same niche role as the likes of Homeland where it'll have few vocal supporters but it has too many skellies in the closet to get the support it needs. Trudging out Corbyn's refusal to consider nukes if we get nuked ourselves would basically turn any non-radical away from him I think.

Apologies, it was Khan who said Starmer is rewarding Humas. Khan fucking agreed with Trump.

So with the IMF, he will have to do it as Reeves is at her borrowing limit with the bank, and the BoE is constantly wanting her to go. An IMF bailout will make what happened to Greece look like a tea party. When the IMF makes demands, too, you have to comply, and I would not be surprised if they bake in repealing the OSA and other draconian measures. I am trying to remember the document, but they said the NHS will go, and social care will be massively changed along with the welfare system. Now they don't want this because the IMF will say no foreigners can receive welfare etc. This will be the biggest bailout, too. They will set this as an example to scare France and Germany, whose economies are in the same position.

In a fucked up way, it's a way for the US to hobble the EU entirely as Germany and France cannot financially contribute, killing the EU of any funding. I don't oppose it either, frankly, the UK healthcare, along with our council systems, is irrelevant and costly.

As for Sultana, she played her hand way too early, to come out as pro OSA along with Muslim is even going to isolate you on the left. A lot of the left is now anti immigration and illegals. This makes the party the Muslim Brotherhood, with White people afraid to lose seats. It forces lefties who are centrists to back Reform. All of this was a petty move to fuck with Starmer, but it's sped up Labour's annihilation.

@BongoMongo If nothing else, Corbyn and his profile will split Labour's vote and will get support from ASLEF/RMT and ultra Left Unions who have had enough of Starmer.

There's a lot of people on the Left who crave a return to Bennite Socialism and who are okay with Brexit but not with Nigel (Labour Leave) as their beef with him is as an opportunist rather than a politician of substance who can make Brexit work. Then again, Trump was never a politician and he seems to be doing a decent enough job.

Is it a nothing burger? Well, even though I wouldn't put money on Jezza being PM (I think that ship has sailed for him) it is the reboot that the Left needs - they don't need the bourgeois 'Labour' members who scoff at the Working Class and believe that eating Quinoa (whatever the hell that is) makes them 'hip' and 'cool'. Just look at the sign-up rate and the amount of people joining them, it's very impressive and it's got more legs than Change UK (if anybody remembers them?)

Will they get any seats at a GE? Maybe in London but the Midlands, South Wales and North is more than likely to go turquoise than whatever colour 'Your Party' uses. I don't doubt, however, that they will poll in the thousands and might even get a few second places given the immolation facing Labour and the Tories, but unless they can either pact with the Lib Dems, Greens, SNP and Plaid (unlikely with the latter two) so that one of them stands in one particular constituency uncontested by the others and they go into coalition if elected as the National Government then their chances of victory are slim.

Don't forget as well that not everywhere in London is red - the affluent Twickenham, Putney, Barnes, Hampton, Richmond and Wimbledon areas are almost exclusively Liberal Democrat whereas Barking and Dagenham are now Reform UK territory (Orpington will be a toss up between the two - that would be Boris Johnson's brother Jo's old seat).

Whatever happens, it certainly won't be dull.
