US Portland, Oregon Megathread - Tales from The Rose City

Didn't see much of a thread regarding all the fine antics of Portland and the people who live there, so I thought to make one.

Lesbian bar shuts down one week after opening because they weren't woke enough

Doc Marie’s is a lesbian bar that opened on July 1st of this year with the hope of bringing more inclusivity to the city of Portland. But just one week after their grand opening they were forced to shut down because of complaints that the bar was not a “safe space.” Similar to the story I wrote a few weeks ago about the queer-owned cafe in Philadelphia that was shut down by employees for not being woke enough, Doc Marie’s was cannibalized by the woke mob.

The crowd on opening day was huge. One woman said that the line for entry on opening night was “wrapped around the block” with “literally 200 lesbians” waiting to get in.

But the excitement about a new progressive hangout dissipated quickly. Within days, Doc Marie’s found itself on the receiving end of accusations of not being inclusive enough for trans people and people of color. Despite mask mandates being lifted in Portland, patrons accused the bar of not implementing enough COVID safety measures. Patrons also claimed that Doc Marie’s had “culturally appropriative art” on the walls.
One TikToker, who says she attended the grand opening, breaks down the accusations against the bar:

Employees of Doc Marie’s created an Instagram page to echo these concerns. They claimed that the owners weren’t proactive enough in creating a safe space and accused the owners of racism. The employees also demanded that the bar host “free opportunities for education” for the community.

Eventually, the employees demanded the owners relinquish ownership of the bar and hand the business to them. The owners were given a “24-hour deadline” to adhere to the ludicrous demands.

Just five days after opening, the bar announced on July 6th that they had to close temporarily in order to address the cries from the woke mob for a “safe and inclusive space.”

Surrendering to the woke mob doesn’t appear to be working out in Doc Marie’s favor, as the bar remains closed with no public plan to reopen.

It's a classic example of dunning-kruger. Essentially they're 10 iq points lower than the rest of the country, but they're in the sweet spot of midwittery where they are unable to recognize this, hence the arrogance.
Portland attracted midwits who were aiming at the middle. People, slightly smarter than a mong, who craved mediocrity and celebration in equal measure. Persona addicts, who spend their life playing a role, inhabiting an ideology, and upset that they aren't getting applause for their performance as Dishevelled Freedom Fighter 638.

It's tragic. 100,000 copies of the same person, too smart to be happy and too stupid to do anything about it.

It's not Portland, but, man, fucking Portland.

This is apparently the opening of a Japanese 100-Yen style shop in Oregon.

The biggest folly of the college "educated" is thinking they're immune to being propagandized. Portlanders will breathe in the piss and meth smoke scented air, look around at all the homelessness and mental illness on full display and call this social progress.

Even people from the slightly less liberal suburbs think Portland has gone too fucking far.

screams in ignored crime statistics

These people treat getting their car broken into or being sexually harassed by a methed out schizo as just another day in paradise.
"It's just how these people are, you know? What right do you or anyone else have to dictate to another human being how they're supposed to be? It's not like you have all your shit together or anything!"

and the response:

"Each of us is the product of their own decisions, whether good or bad. Just because you have a shitty life doesn't mean you get a free pass to make other people's lives shittier, even if you want to pretend like you're some kind of fucked-up Robin Hood and only taking from those who have something worth taking! Get the fuck away from me, you self-righteous hypocritical piece of shit!"

Department store CEO says he’s unsure ‘how long we can continue to operate in Portland’

Jul. 31, 2025

One of downtown Portland’s big-name department stores may be on the brink.

In a community meeting Monday to discuss a proposed homeless shelter in the Pearl District, Mayor Keith Wilson addressed the state of retail in the city. He referenced the high vacancy rate in downtown Portland and news that Fred Meyer will soon close its Gateway store.

Then, he steered attention toward a recent conversation with the CEO of Nordstrom, a luxury department store chain with several locations across the Portland area.

“I met with Erik Nordstrom the other day, and he says, ‘Keith, I don’t know how long we can continue to operate in Portland,’” Wilson said partway through the meeting. “How many of our signature businesses do we have to lose before we say ‘enough, enough, enough’?”

A Nordstrom spokesperson said Thursday there are no present updates on company’s future in the city.

“Currently there are no planned changes to our Portland stores,” they said in an email statement. “We continue to work with the city to explore how we can best serve our customers and the Portland community.”

The Seattle-based department chain operates eight stores in Oregon, including three in Portland. Downtown Portland is home to one full-line store and a Nordstrom Rack, the company’s discounted division, and there is a second Nordstrom Rack in Cascade Station.

Nordstrom closed its Clackamas Town Center store in 2020, one of 16 to close permanently amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Its Salem location closed in 2018, following closures in Vancouver and at the Lloyd Center in 2015.

There have been concerns about the longevity of downtown Portland’s Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack locations in the past.

In 2023, after the company announced plans to shutter both its downtown San Francisco stores, a spokesperson told the Portland Business Journal it did “not have plans to close” its store in downtown Portland.

During the first four months of that same year, the downtown Nordstrom Rack was among the city’s top three businesses to report theft and burglary, with 150 reports, according to reporting by The Oregonian/OregonLive. The downtown flagship reported just over 20 cases.

Several major retailers have pulled out of the city’s core in the past several years, many citing theft or crime as reasons for closing up shop.

Outdoor retail giant REI didn’t renew the lease on its Pearl District building last year, attributing the closure to rising security costs due to break-ins and theft. Target closed three Portland stores in 2023, one which was downtown, also citing theft. In 2017, Macy’s closed and sold its store in the historic Meier & Frank Building.
