I'm just now realizing that applies to the plates as well. But still, 20 seconds seems like a lot for the resulting photo that's a 10x difference

1840s dageurrotypes requires 40-60 second exposure. By the 1860s, you have the wet colloidon process, which took only 1-5 seconds. Cheaper tintypes took 1-20 seconds exposure.

Specifically looking for those I'm not seeing any that developed that quickly at the time. 5-20 seconds for wet collodion and 20-60 for tintypes is what I'm finding, and tintypes were the most commonly used. Wet collodion survived into the 30s (and has been revived in the last few decades just for fun) and I'm sure it got faster over time but I just can't find a reference to them being that fast in the 1850s/60s
