A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Not to give too much away, but I recently attended a function in the area as the friend of a former Treasury Manager of Nottinghamshire County Council (can say who he is in DM, if interested) and he said during informal chat that the Red Cross is paying for these illegals to come here if one of their family has already been given residency.

Nobody was surprised - disgusted yes, surprised no.

The language MPs have started to use to describe laws like they have already been passed and try to smash them past all the stages without any debate so they can portray themselves as doing more in knee jerk responses is another sign of how bad things are. Rather than well thought out laws that can actually do anything we are just going to have loads of meme laws that ended up existing just so an MP could get a soundbite of how well hard they are and none of the MPs even bothered to go in to debate as laws are getting decided more outside of parliament between MPs before they even get put forward rather than in the chambers.

You should never donate to the Red Cross, since the lefty take over in the 90's the Red Cross spend 85% of it's donations on "staffing salaries" and less then 5% ever makes it down to anyone aside the wokies working in the offices.

If you have the urge to donate, donate local. Support your local food bank or better yet talk to your church and find out where help is needed. Never give your money to any of the big multi-national charities, they're all without exception scams.

I’ve noticed that in other places. Especially the Peak District. None of them ever bring proper hiking gear or walking boots so they just end up in the way because they don’t want their trainers dirty. Did they know what the Peak District is? But this is becoming increasingly common now. Even the Cotswolds when I went recently is not safe. Large groups of them congregate at all the touristy sports . Not sure where is safe.

Slight PL but near me there’s a nice lake which one can walk, bike whatever around. The indigenous people walk a couple of miles down old knackered roads and have a pleasant walk around. Poo hands however will drive down a fucked road full of massive potholes and bits of wood just to avoid having to walk anywhere. Did laugh when I saw one of them pushing a massive baby buggy. Turns out it was the brother/uncle with extra chromosomes pushing the most inhovis uncle/brother while all the other family member fucked off.

Another PL is going to local big shopping centre. Goat lovers can’t understand roundabouts and seem to pick lanes at random. Or they pick the most incorrect lane and go left hand lane to go right and right hand to exit. It’s like wacky fucking races.

I am with you about the Red Cross but fucking knock that on the head about the RNLI, they are unpaid volunteers who go out in all weather an rescue anybody in distress at sea, regardless of who they are they are one of the VERY few truly impartial services and they do incredible work with very little funding.

The reason they help the illegals in distress is because they help anyone in distress even during ww2 they rescued German sailors if there boats foundered in areas they covered (an they handed them over to the police / army once safe), I know it's not the same but they are honnor bound to help anyone regardless of who or what they are and do the often thankless and rarely talked about job well.
