King of the hill appreciation thread - Yup.

The cracks are already starting to show.
I heard somewhere that there are going to be a couple of callbacks to the earlier seasons of the show. If they're just stuff like catch phrases "I'll tell you hwat", or "that boy ain't right" I won't mind but if they start bringing in gags at the internet made into memes "that's my purse" "pocket sand" etc... then that's pushing it and definitely aside they're going to flanderize the living fuck out of this revival.

this is what KOTH cartoon reviewer Johnny 2Cellos has to say about it.

You could argue that over the years he tried to work on reducing his accent. Knew a few immigrants who did this because they were self conscious about it. But yeah even then it still seems a bit off.
People like this still retain some of their accents because that's a hard thing to get rid of. But this actor ironically sounds like a white dude pretending to sound Asian. How funny is that?

Khan sounds so weird now.
He sounds terrible.
In a sane world, Toby should have have continued, but Americanised the accent, as even I admit it was a bit stereotypical.
But if we are playing that game, why is ethnic Chinese actress Lauren Tom playing a Laotian, when Chinese have been stomping on Laotians for centuries.
But in Disney's racist antiracist world, all Asians are interchangable.

Nearing the end of season four in my rewatch, just seen the episode where Bobby turns out to be the reincarnated Buddha. Hank takes Bobby to see the Minister at church:

Minister "Bobby, do you love Jesus?"
Bobby (earnestly) "with all my heart"
Hank (under his breath) "buddhist liar..."

Nearly shit myself laughing. Also this is one of my favourite episodes and possibly one I would show to someone new to the show - like all good comedies it hits you in the feels when Bobby picks the mirror because he sees Connie's reflection on it.

The Babylon 5 curse.

Yeah, it's probably a mandate from Disney.
Khan sounds so weird now.

This new VA sounds terrible. It's like someone with whom English is their first language trying to talk like an ESL-speaker while HR is in the room, so it just sounds stuff and completely off.

Nobody outside of the American VA industry even cares about "race accurate" voice casting anymore.

Khan sounds so weird now.
Toby Huss' performance as Kahn was iconic. He made the character and gave him so much soul and likeability. I'm sad.
What the fuck, that's so fucking bad. They replaced the white voice actor with an asian that sounds like a white guy. Fucking hell, when I looked up the dude before he didn't sound like he'd be that bad.

Daily reminder to celebrate the contributions of ProZD to the voice acting industry.

Apparently the new VA is not even Laotian. Knowing Asian cultures that is probably even more offensive to them if they are even offended at all.

I dont know about this new season. Only watched the first episode so far and it feels off to me. I know the original show had B plots but jumping to Bobby randomly didnt make sense. Does it get any better?

Just watched the first episode onto the second episode.

We're already starting strong with Peggy oversharing about Hank's narrow urethra in the airplane and Hank being introduced and baffled to a gentrified Arlen. Bobby having his own restaurant, but still needing a roommate is relatable. I think Boomhauer settled down, Dale was mayor and Bill is bedridden. Oh, and Peggy is mispronouncing foreign words yet again.

So far, it looks like the first episode just throws out current year blights and talking points on top of each other. On demand ride sharing, college education, inflation, gentrification, COVID-19. What took me by surprise was how Hank was accustomed to Saudi Arabia's culture being "traditional," in reality, it's an imitation of Americano culture while being behind in gender norms. That gave me a chuckle.

The next episode now has Hank taking up a hobby with brewing his own beer against Bobby and how confused he is with beer having different flavors.

Let me know if I should spoil plot points or not.

After binge watching the new season I went back to Season 5 and the difference in quality is night and day.

I never understood why anime nerds would call King of the Hill a “slice of life” cartoon because it wasn’t in the prime years but it very much developed into one in the later crappier seasons and is one now. Like these new episodes have the occasional funny line but now it’s more about them telling their feelings instead of delivering humor.

Also I think it’s lame they don’t even mention Luanne they should have written her and Lucky off by saying they moved to Montana to run the Platter Ranch.

The animation is taking some getting used to. I'm on the third episode now, and wow, I'm cracking up with its A plot. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this season now sets up both subplots at the start before transitioning between A and B.

A plot: Bobby Hill is running out of charcoal for his restaurant operation. He has to find another supplier.
B plot: Hank and friends are visiting the George Bush museum. Hank loves the stern facts, Dale goes into conspiracy.

The whole A plot revolves around cultural appropriation. Bobby tries calling Mr. Yoshida for charcoal. They won't sell to him because he's not Japanese. He tries to grease the wheels by bringing in Chang Wassanasong in person to meet Mr. Yoshida, which Chang clearly declares he's not Japanese. (Nice callback to a prior episode when first meeting Kahn in the neighborhood.)

He goes to meet Mr. Yoshida. Mr. Yoshida is Black, but he was born in Japan with Japanese parents. Then, Mr. Yoshida and Chang get into a cultural spat about Asian heritage, while Chang is outwitted by the Black Yoshida. :story: Next, he goes to an Italian restaurant and does the whole "make an offer he can't refuse" skit. They get mad and accuse him of racism.

Yep, I think Mike Judge has still got it. A White guy, Bobby, wants to make authentic ethnic food, but everybody is giving him shit for it. Oh, now some German critics come into his establishment and lecture him on Bobby's mixed heritage. I never laughed that long from TV before.

So is it unfortunately pretty mid? That's the vibes I'm getting.
I think it's slightly above average but I was already going in with low expectations so that might have helped. Don't like how they turned up Peggy's bullshit up to 11

Also, episode 9 was written by the bitch who did Velma so take that as you may before going in.

Earlier, I said how it's so Hank for him to give a four-star rating to an Uber driver to "work on improvement." The actual episode revealed that Hank was back-seat driving during the ride.

"You might want to check on your idling engine, driver." Something like that. Nice curveball. I felt that Uber driver's response to Hank's four-star rating despite going above and beyond.

How fucking insufferable was Peggy with her wanting a beer named after her? That was peak flanderization.

Episode 9 was okay just because I liked the flashback with Cotton. Also being on Kiwifarms I know full well that the Manosphere Self Help grifters are just as shitty as that episode parodies, if anything it was a gentle mocking of them since the self help guru didn’t get caught being a full degenerate.
