DOOM

Im marathoning classic doom and forgive me if this has been asked but what are your personal opinions on the expansions?

I'll throw my hat towards the ones I have played already.

Sigil 1 - Brutal, John Romero holds nothing back as he looks for creative ways to fuck you up with the the somewhat limited enemy cast of Doom 1 and this expansion will make you miss the shit out of the Super Shotgun as you will be left shotgunning Barons and thats just miserable even if you got plenty of space to dodge their attacks. In fact, the shotgun is the workhorse weapon as Romero really tries his best to make the enemy placement of the shotgunners are optimized as it can be to mess you up, they might not be chaingunners but under the right conditions, a couple of them can do a similar effect. The eye switch thing is a bit gimmicky but you can get used to it, surely is something that makes Sigil stand out. My biggest criticism isnt the difficulty (made even harder on UV as a troll from Romero's part, no doubt), its the overusage of the Cyberdemon as there are moments where this bovine beast is used a rocket turret when normally revenants would take that role. It is ball bustingly hard tho. Recommended

Sigil 2 - More of the same if not maybe slightly easier, there are some fireblue wall secret alongside with the eye switches gimmick so keep an "eye" out for those. Really engaging either way but I think its this expansion that begins to truly appreciate the stuff that Doom 2 brought to the table as the new monsters and Super Shotgun really brought everything together to assure Doom is truly an unforgettable experience. Recommended

TNT Evilution - Now this is where things get bad because TNT is the biggest mixed bag that has ever mixed bag, at least on the terms of official releases (and before you say "Sigil 1/2 werent official releases". Uhhh, shut up). Some levels I had a good time but some levels just draaaaagged ooooooon and Im sure any of you that played it know exactly which ones Im refering to and the list sadly isnt small. But even the good levels dont reach quality heights where Im legit having a blast, just a "Well, this was decent, hopefully the next one is too", which really feels like a case of damned by faint praise in a Doom sense. I dont regret playing it but I do think that the music is the best thing that came out of this whole thing. Its just the most "Meh" that has ever meh-ed, especially how quality standards has increased since. Reco-meh-nded

Plutonia - I initially thought I was going to hate Plutonia's difficult but Im going to be very honest here...after playing D1,sigil 1/2,D2 and then TNT...Plutonia didnt feel so challenging, it was even pretty engaging actually. Now there are indeed bullshit moments of the likes only the Casali brothers could unleash upon me but you really start to understand the method to their madness as the level designs start to feel intriguing over the ways they will attempt to mess you up, to the point I was legit mentally slow clapping with a "well played, Casali". Plutonia is a true test of Doom, if you can have a good time with this, it truly means you "got" Doom and its inner workings and you truly adjust to any situation. Im glad that the Casalis went to work for Valve, which...boy, modding used to get you places back on the day, didnt it? Recommended

No Rest for the Living - Didnt play it yet but I hear good things about it, so it will probably be decent if somewhat easy given how I'll have been jacked up on Plutonia level experience.

Legacy of Rust - Havent finished it but I did play the early levels and it is pretty good, very Plutonia-esque in some places but if you got that "experience", you will quickly adapt and overcome. The new weapons are unique even if I dont think they change much. The new enemies made from beta sprites are also unique and I enjoy to see how they change some dynamics.

Well, I think that accounts for everything. What are your personal takes?

People who suck off old doom are just as gay. Just like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or MGS the fanbase of a series considered the "originator" of a genre will be chock full of faggots who endlessly whine about shit because they're butthurt things change. With Doom it is particularly pathetic because WADs exist. Eternal is still the best Doom game WADs excluded because it took the Itagaki approach to design instead of the utter hack "play it your own way" bullshit that lazy devs fall back on.

Oh look, a normally looking face.

Not an ill-ridden blob like it was in Eternal. With eyes as big and wide as your tranime in doom can be.

I assume its a result of several centuries of constant fighting and grinding when not fighting. I can imagine it wasnt easy to find a way to bring the "classic Doom face" into HD where that had been done by fans multiple times already.

In a way, he kind of looks like 2003's hulk

Champions flopping was the one for Quake. Honestly feel like TDA started as Quake but they changed because they dont think the IP can carry it.
That's retarded, just because some shitty Quake 3 remaster flopped means nothing when we have OG Quake and Strogg Quake(2&4). Hell, how about trying something new with the brand then?
I think the answer is simple, iD are just creatively bankrupt and want to turn Doom into a game for speedrunners with a quirky, grimdark setting and marvel tier writing complete with making memes canon because why the fuck not. There was nothing wrong with keeping the franchise going as is with 2016, Doom 2 didn't throw out the entire formula to become a 2D platformer either it just took everything Doom 1 had but made it better and added one of the best shotguns in history of gaming.

Doom Eternal was a really hard act to follow. It had perfect mechanics for the combat style it was going for. It also felt like Dethklok designed the game.
The Dark ages was trying to do both quake and hexen. It also felt like the game was a mess from COVID as well. Everything has a lack of focus like similar stuff. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt here.
I think the bigger problem is, they can't just release the same game but better. Even if iD are 100% truthful about getting complete creative freedom from Bethesda they still have the pressure to make line go up, which means growing their audience by adding new gimmicks and/or completely changing everything. There's a joke I've seen floating around about a Linux Developer in a saw trap that consists of a room with a wheel in it. The developer's challenge is to leave the room without reinventing it. The wheel works just fine. The door is open.

Substitute in Hugo Martin and the joke still works.
