Starship Troopers is a fun action movie, but as a case study of political ideologies or society or the nature of propaganda yadda yadda yadda it's about as shallow as you can get. It was so poorly executed in it's """"satire"""" of fascism that critics of the time unironically thought it was a pro-fascist movie, and the director (who openly admitted that he didn't even read the book he was adapting) had to come out and run damage control in interviews.

You want actual nuance read the novel. It's a bit dry, but it had far more thought put into it.
It’s like when people try to say warhammer is satire, when everything the imperium says about chaos, neurons and orks is right. Hell even the “nicest faction” the tau are still suprimicist for their own species they just like to use other species as nice shields.

It could be argued the United Citizens Federation is a form of a utopian state. They don't persecute any ethnic groups There outright opposition to Bolshevism and liberalism that would be expected in a fascist society which Starship Troopers is sometimes accused of being. Despite lacking the right to vote, civilians are not discriminated against, and enjoy equal protection under the law alongside citizens, with the exceptions being the right to vote and government-subsidized tuition fees. The strangest thing to me is that they make a big deal about voluntarily joining the military for citizenship and don't just conscript everyone for a set amount of time which in real life many governments do.
I think its pretty obvious that the whole set up is to not reward but bestow the right to those that understand sacrifice and service. General compulsory service would destroy both the moral of the service, and make sacrifice a demand of the state onto its citizenry, destroying liberty.

Fyi I fucking called it. I said the reason they're giving Maxwell temporary immunity over her testimony is more than likely because criminal investigations are opening up, and thats also a reason why they are not releasing the Epstein files because that would toss out the evidence in any criminal trial. Lo and behold the house oversight committee has subpoenaed several people on BOTH SIDES of the political spectrum to talk about Epstein
•William Barr – August 18
•Jeff Sessions – August 28
•Robert Mueller – September 2
•Loretta Lynch – September 9
•Eric Holder – September 30
•Merrick Garland – October 2
•James Comey – October 7
•Hillary Clinton – October 9
•Bill Clinton – October 14
These are all the people who have been subpoenaed over Epstein.
This comes directly from the chair of the house oversight committe James Comer
I would also like to point out that because of immunity some of these people have to testify

The source material is wildly, diametrically different than the movie, where the army has absolute control of everything, and the general populace serves the pointless war machine, all with a lot of rose-tinted glasses by the author.

The two brothers that made the movie, made the UCF actually more palatable in their attempt to satirize the concept of a military-run state. Ironic, isn't it?

Helldivers is what pseudointellectuals claim Starship Troopers is.
And then progtards claim that the bugs and the bots did nothing wrong and it loops back in on itself in an ouroboros that leftists are fundamentally incapable of understanding.

is that a story about the cast of Archie hiding in a bunker?
Archie Bunker was the conservative dad on a sitcom called "All in the Family". He was written as a dumb bigot who would be corrected by his airhead wife, ditz daughter, or righteous hippie stand in son in law.

Archie, written to make fun of conservative America, was loved by everyone and many tv watchers considered his blatant strawman positions based and right, thus foiling the intention of the writers.

When your species' nasty thoughts can result in a real, tangible demonic incursion if some of your citizens have funny mental powers, the only logical conclusion is to suppress public thought and liberties.

Context matters, even in works of parody.

I don't think that promising civil conflict will work out as well for them as they think, should it reach that point. It would make the Sherman-posting on reddit look ridiculous.

Also her words sound a lot like incitement of violence which is not covered by the speech and debate clause. She is writing some pretty hefty checks lately and I doubt she has the political capital to cover them.

It's central to their societies philosophy that the people with the ability to influence the government have the understanding and commitment needed to actually contribute positively.

They will actively try to discourage people from joining by showing the horrible shit that can happen to you in combat specifically to weed out people that aren't actually committed to the understanding that service is supposed to instill in you, and people are free to leave service at any time, for any reason, with no punishment or ire from the government or society at large. You just say you want to go home, and you can go home. The only thing that changes is you can't re-apply for service, you only get the one chance.

It MUST be your choice to serve. Conscripting people would destroy the entire point.

Before the Federation, the Earth was fucked. Global wars destroyed everything, gangs roamed and pillaged as they pleased, and there were no governments left. Millions of combat veterans that bled and suffered for their homelands were left with nothing to go back to and nothing to show for their sacrifices. They were the ones that formed the Federation, and they were the only ones that truly understood what the Federation could give and why it and the ideals behind it needed to exist.

Voting is not simply a... reward for service, it's a responsibility given to the people who truly understand what it means. Being a citizen is a sacrifice.
